Trump says he fired top cybersecurity official Christopher Krebs
- SethTro 6y ago> Reuters recently reported he expected to be fired after he pushed back against false claims that Democrats "rigged" the election, a claim that Trump has heavily promoted. Sad day when doing your job means you get fired.
- gitweb 6y agoGuess the Republicans should have passed the election security bills that the Democrats requested, but they'd rather sow division and chaos after they already lost. What poor losers!
- SV_BubbleTime 6y agoI’m not familiar with that. What bills are those?
- galaxyLogic 6y agohttps://thehill.com/homenews/house/482569-senate-gop-blocks-three-election-security-bills https://thehill.com/homenews/house/482569-senate-gop-blocks-...
- rodgerd 6y agoAnother bit of lunacy, but no doubt his supporters will continue to attack anyone who tries to deal with reality.
- revscat 6y agoReality is whatever Conservatives tell each other it is.
- NikolaeVarius 6y agoGoddamnit. Krebs and not-fired-but-leaving Jim Bridenstine are the few people in the Govt I consider very good at their jobs
- stjohnswarts 6y agoBiden can rehire him. I don't think anyone will look at his firing by Trump as anything but a plus as far as integrity and decision making go.
- gremlinsinc 6y agoI see you were in the Trump administration. Hmm... Looks like all positions are full...wait, says here you were fired? Well, you can't be all that bad, welcome aboard!
- jooize 6y ago> The Pentagon’s top policy official, James Anderson, resigned in anticipation of being fired by Trump. What is the reasoning behind resigning when (presumably) disagreeing with being fired? Is it all optics?
- CobrastanJorji 6y agoSome folks feel strongly about serving "at the pleasure of the President" and resign if they feel the President would prefer they do so. Some folks don't like the idea of news articles about them saying "fired." Some folks believe inaction cannot be the solution to a problem, even if it's the right choice.
- atty 6y agoPerhaps the method of leaving could have an impact on benefits or the ability to get future high level positions in the government?
- ponker 6y agoWhy sit around waiting and wondering if you can just pack your bag and go home?
- SV_BubbleTime 6y agoThe tweets said Krebs called it the most secure election in history. I like Krebs, but how can an election with anyone on the voter rolls getting a ballot mailed to them possibly be the most secure ever? We are 100% certain our voter rolls are not entirely clean. I’m not saying there was voter fraud, but Kreb’s statement just seems odd. Best possible case, there was no chain of custody for ballots, so even if there were no issues or reasons to be suspicious, it just isn’t a great claim. If you look at the Trump tweets (ugh), it says dead people voting, software glitches switching voters, and observers being unequally treated. I’m sure in tiny tiny doses thats all possible. Should Krebs be fired just for saying the election was the most secure ever? Obviously not! ... but devil’s advocate, I don’t see how it could have been. We relaxed integrity requirements because of Covid, not increased them. Edit: look how little room there is to step out of line, hmm
- julienchastang 6y agoThere was a recent article about this latest purge in the nytimes[1]. Apparently, it has more to do with "score settling" and replacing officials with loyalists and "yes" men/women. - erulabs 6y agoHeh, I suppose that’ll be a two month vacation then? It’s a strange thing to feel sorry for the DHS though, which I wouldn’t mind seeing shuttered entirely. Petty alternative for a lack of evidence by someone with access to all intel.
- robbiet480 6y agoPretty sure his position was senate confirmed, so he can’t just be instantly brought back.
- revscat 6y agoI fear that the measures needed to see power properly transferred will soon require remedies that the judiciary is unequipped for.
- redis_mlc 6y ago> I fear The election isn't even over yet, and you fear a transfer of power hasn't been done? That's not how democracy works, but then the left has endorsed violence, Marxism, deplatforming and rigged voting to subvert democracy at every turn in 2020. Democrats, look in the mirror when you talk about divisiveness. > will soon require remedies Yes, the National Guard is the remedy for your suggestion to undermine democracy with more riots.
- gitweb 6y agoSomeone joined the Trump cult.
- redis_mlc 6y agoWhy is my sibling post discussing admitted Democratic Party malfeasance flagged ? It is entirely factual. Looks like HN has stooped to the leftist censorship levels of Twitter and Youtube.
- robbiet480 6y agoA tweet from Chris Krebs responding to the news: https://twitter.com/c_c_krebs/status/1328859222071783424?s=21 https://twitter.com/c_c_krebs/status/1328859222071783424?s=2...
- sundvor 6y agoThanks. Is there something behind "tomrorow [sic]" e.g. in the direction of fixing the mistakes of today, or just a typo?
- stensonb 6y agoDoesn't this actually mean "Krebs on vacation until Jan 21st."
- irrational 6y agoIf people are brought back, do their years of service for pensions start over or continue from where they left off?
- stjohnswarts 6y agoI'm sure the President can make it thus.
- dhab 6y agounpaid one
- OpticalWindows 6y agowat
- TechBro8615 6y agoTotally unrelated, but I’ve been wondering, is he related to Brian Krebs?
- robbiet480 6y agoHe is not, according to this tweet from Brian Krebs: https://twitter.com/briankrebs/status/1328859929214595072?s=21 https://twitter.com/briankrebs/status/1328859929214595072?s=...
- solarkraft 6y agoI know oddly many people with the last name "Krebs" working in cyber security.
- notRobot 6y agoNo, just happen to the the same surname.
- ackbar03 6y agoLol was wondering the same thing myself haha
- deleted 6y ago[deleted]
- heroprotagonist 6y agoOdd, but I am more familiar with Brian Krebs than Christopher Krebs, in the security space. I like Krebs, but I think Schneier would be my pick for the job if I were allowed to make decisions like this.
- cyberlurker 6y agoI doubt Schneier would want the job. I listened to C Krebs talk on a conference call to mayors around the country about basic cyber security concepts and government resources available to them. It isn’t a very technical job but it’s an important one.
- hintymad 6y agoAs long as Trump can withdraw the troops from the countries like Afghanistan, I'd say he's doing his job. By the way, he didn't even attempt to start a war or invade a country for a bag of god-knows-what white powder, did he? And a bunch of generals and officials did want to either start a war or put more troops to a why-give-a-fuck country, right?
- hintymad 6y agoYeah, right. The downvotes are tell me truth matters more than facts, and any objection on sending troops overseas is considered, what, evil?
- Pfhreak 6y agoReducing American deployments is necessary, but not sufficient to "do his job". He is not "doing his job" if that's the only thing he accomplishes.
- hintymad 6y agoDoing his job in the context of firing opposing officials. I didn't mean that was all he needed to do.
- yodon 6y agoTruth should never be declared an opposing viewpoint. Leaders want honesty from their subordinates. Narcissists want loyalty.
- craftinator 6y agoBan.
- alpha_squared 6y ago> As long as Trump can withdraw the troops from the countries like Afghanistan, I'd say he's doing his job. As someone who is extremely dovish and an immigrant, I always grimace a little bit when I see this sentiment. There is a way to leave the country you have chosen to occupy and it's not as simple as saying you will withdraw and then withdrawing all presence in the region. The absurd power vacuum left behind causes massive geopolitical instability in the region that often spills over into neighboring countries which themselves have existing relationships with other parts of the world. Doing that is exactly how you alienate all allies in some manner as well as disregard the several lives who'll likely perish as a result of the instability. For better or worse, the US got itself into this mess and getting out of war is often much harder than entering it. This is exactly why people advocate for diplomacy over war.
- adamcanady 6y agoApparently this isn't the same Krebs as https://krebsonsecurity.com/ https://krebsonsecurity.com/ [0] [0] Funny enough, the website has a broken SSL cert at the time of writing.
- lostcolony 6y agoExpired an hour ago from the time you posted.
- tialaramex 6y agoIt has expired. A nice example for why shorter lifetimes encourage a healthier approach to renewals with better monitoring and so on. Krebs has a (now expired) certificate from Sectigo (were Comodo CA) but with a long lifetime. There's a good chance that it was so long ago nobody remembered it needs to be periodically renewed.
- chrisco255 6y agoDr. Shiva has done statistical analysis on the voting data in Michigan, which compares straight party voting to the Presidential candidates and it indicates that a weighted voting algorithm was used to manipulate totals: https://youtu.be/Ztu5Y5obWPk https://youtu.be/Ztu5Y5obWPk Biden's vote tallies also miss on Benford's law, which is used for fraud detection: https://principia-scientific.com/joe-bidens-votes-violate-benfords-law-mathematics/ https://principia-scientific.com/joe-bidens-votes-violate-be... Yesterday 2600 uncounted votes were found in Floyd County Georgia after an elections official failed to include a thumb drive in the initial count: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/georgia-recount-unearths-more-than-2600-uncounted-ballots-in-floyd-county-report/ar-BB1b5svJ https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/georgia-recount-unearths-m... Today a second Georgia county reported another nearly 3,000 votes were not tallied: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/second-georgia-county-finds-nearly-3-000-previously-uncounted-votes/ar-BB1b6FQI https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/second-georgia-count... I don't know about you, but I find that our democracy depends on thousands of people moving and shifting thumb drives around on unaudited, closed-source voting machines running Windows 7 to be extremely dubious and insecure. I don't know why we ever went away from paper ballots. And if we're going to use software to assist, it should be open source, audits should be automatic, and maybe the ballots should be scanned through two different devices manufactured by two different companies just to flag any major discrepancies.
- jameskilton 6y agoBenford's law does not work in elections and does not prove or disprove voter fraud. https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-factcheck-benford/fact-check-deviation-from-benfords-law-does-not-prove-election-fraud-idUSKBN27Q3A https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-factcheck-benford/fact-ch...
- chrisco255 6y agoThat's a 404. And your fact checker would be wrong anyways. "Digital analysis using Benford’s Law was also used as evidence of voter fraud in the 2009 Iranian election. In fact, Benford’s Law is legally admissible as evidence in the US in criminal cases at the federal, state and local levels. This fact alone substantiates the potential usefulness of using Benford’s Law." https://www.isaca.org/resources/isaca-journal/past-issues/2011/understanding-and-applying-benfords-law https://www.isaca.org/resources/isaca-journal/past-issues/20...
- solarkraft 6y agoTitle is "Trump says he fired top cybersecurity official Christopher Krebs". ... okay, but did he? Trump also says he won the election. Can we get facts back into headlines and reporting in general?
- HeyZuess 6y agoWas it in uppercase like "I WON THE ELECTION", because that means it's true.
- Guereric 6y agoWhy is this flagged?
- swat535 6y agoBecause political discussions (except a few narrow events) are not encourage on HN, it goes against the spirit of the site AFAIK.
- thelazydogsback 6y agoHire. Fire. Hire. == the Krebs cycle
