Why Github uses Haskell for its newly released Semantic package
- StavrosK 7y agoWhy?
- jonahx 7y agoBecause in its current form the subject and verb don't agree.
- StavrosK 7y agoOnly in American English. Groups are plural in British English. "The police are corrupt" vs "the police is corrupt".
- theli0nheart 7y agoI have no idea if what you're saying is generally true, but I can say with certainty that no one would ever say "the police is corrupt" in American English.
- mlthoughts2018 7y agoA better example might be a British soccer club, e.g. Chelsea are corrupt.
- harry8 7y agoThe police force are corrupt vs the police force is corrupt.
- outside1234 7y agoThat second example is not valid in any English.
- smudgymcscmudge 7y agoIt could be valid if the subject is a British, new wave band, but otherwise, I agree with you.
- chachachoney 7y agoCan you show an example of an article in a British publication that treats singular corporate entities as plural? (theregister.co.uk doesn't appear to follow the convention)
- sk5t 7y agoGood try but an errant example. American English treats "police" as a plural noun (although maybe not always in Baltimore). In the British style, "Microsoft have released a press briefing"; in American, "Microsoft has released a press briefing."
- justforyou 7y agoYes. Please.
