On a bit of a tangential note: I am really not a fan of using the term "poaching" for this. The engineer is not a piece of property, and it is certainly not an illegal or immoral act. Employees are allowed to leave for a different job (Interestingly the headline is the only place that term is used, they use "hire" in the article and in the HTML Header).
- dekhn 8y agoemployee poaching is a legal term with a long historical precedent.
- geezerjay 8y agoThe expression might have precedent but it does express a notion of property and dehumanizes the employee, as if he's a product without free will.
- BossingAround 8y ago> Interestingly the headline is the only place that term is used, they use "hire" in the article and in the HTML Header Clickbait headlines--whatever arouses any emotion in you (e.g. anger, sadness, curiosity, love, ...) will make them more money. Of course, I agree with you. I'd expect better from the 9to5 family...
- kevin_b_er 8y agoThat is not how our society operations. The workers are property under how it works. As the corporation is a manifested creature of immoral and sociopathic greed, only barely constrained by the will of the people with the constraints being actively targeted by a major political faction, the employee is mostly property. As one sided employment agreements that only place liabilities upon the employee continue to grow, you will become more aware of this truth as time goes on.
- brudgers 8y agoWhen it comes to Apple and Google (and Silicon Valley in general) "poaching" has some historical precedent. http://fortune.com/2015/09/03/koh-anti-poach-order/ http://fortune.com/2015/09/03/koh-anti-poach-order/
- blueboo 8y agoTop tech companies go to great lengths to obscure key technical contributors to projects. Engineers are not property, no. But the information around their value-add is, at the very least, an obscured secret! Therefore it is newsworthy when a competitor decodes that value and offers a package that acknowledges that value.
