Seattle Startup School May 31st Sixhourstartup.com
- calvin 18y agoI'm looking forward to this event. As an entrepreneur just starting out, I'm hoping this event will help me learn more of the basics of running my own company, and help me to understand the day-to-day of the startup world. I've got to say I've learned a lot just reading Hacker News and the articles referenced here, but having in-person events to go to helps a lot.
- shawndrost 18y ago"Like Startup School, but more expensive and with people you haven't heard of!"
- kradic 18y agoInfinitely more expensive, in fact.
- kirubakaran 18y agoSS wasn't really free for the most of us. In my case - Air Travel: $180, Hotel: $140, Car: $30 etc ... (I'm not going to make a lame "priceless" joke here) Think of the expenses of the dudes from UK!
- roberte3 18y agoSix Hour Startup runs monthly free events on every Second Saturday of the month her were we build really great cool projects like timelope.com, poormikes.org. (our next project is on May 10th. The conference is being run as close to at cost as possible. This isn't comdex, and we have a huge number of college student discount admissions. The goal of the event isn't to have a bunch of famous people lecture at you, (although we have some really cool seattle based speakers attending) its to give you the hands on tools you need to build a great startup. At the end of the day you will have a hackers guide to getting your company up and running.
- shawndrost 18y agoYeah, don't mind my snark -- you guys are doing good work, keep it up!
- edw519 18y agoApples and oranges. They don't have SUS speakers (who does?) and they charge a small fee. So what? Sounds like a good thing to me.
- timr 18y agoYeah, but...I didn't go to Startup School for the speakers. I went to Startup School to meet the people who go to Startup School. I'm not going to say anything bad about this group, but I'm not likely to pay for a one-day conference to learn how to incorporate and keep ledgers. Those topics aren't served well by the format.
- edw519 18y agoIf I lived in Seattle, I'd definitely go just to meet people. Probably not for out of towners, though.
- timr 18y agoAt least half of the people I met there were from outside of the bay. Anyway, perhaps Bay-area residents never lack for motivation or meetups with liked-minded people, but for me, that aspect was far more important than the content of the talks.
- MarinaMartin 18y agoThis conference sounds awesome. As an efficiency consultant, I can't think of anything better than getting all your business basics taken care of in a single day!
- kradic 18y agoThis comment sounds suspicious. As a long-time News.YC reader, I can't think of anything more obviously sockpuppetish than a newly created account whose first comment is a breathless puff for an obscure conference!
- npost 18y agoI know this person and the people doing the conference and trust them both. Feel free to contact me directly nathan (at) npost (.) com if you have any questions.
- hugh 18y agoThanks for your opinion, Person Who Coincidentally Happens To Have Exactly The Same Name As One Of the Conference Organizers. (Update: Incidentally, it took me a while to find out the names of the organizers from the website. Which is odd -- most conference organizers love to let you know exactly who they are.)
- roberte3 18y agoNot really when you realize that we are a small group of hackers trying to put on an event. I personally try to let my work speak for itself. The goal of this conference isn't for us to become rich and famous, its to get us the answers we need for bring our startups on line. This is going to be a small event less of hopefully a 100 people. We are trying our best to put it on for as close to cost, without have a huge bankroll of money to do it with. Most of the 'startup' events in Seattle and Silicon Valley assume that you have many thousands of dollars to spend on their event we don't. This is a total bootstrap by people eating the dog food. Any questions, complaints, whatever about this feel free to send them to me. Rob Eickmann roberte3@gmail.com
- npost 18y agoI will be there! Will be great for local startups to get some great information on how to form a company, building it up, etc.
- flipper 18y agoGee, the people from Sevenhourstartup.com are going to be pissed when they hear about this. Six? Seven's the number, man! Sorry, been reading reddit too much. Seriously, it sounds cool, and if I was anywhere near Seattle I'd go.
- webwright 18y ago$99 is generally a really good deal for a conference. Only people like Paul Graham can put on stuff like Startup School for free. This was organized by a group of Seattle Hackers who are just trying to do a good thing. No ulterior motive. No goal of profit. No hustle for sponsors. I know the people putting it on-- they are decent chaps... And I know a couple of the speakers (in fact, I might be on a panel). WTF is the point of attacking the event?

- vlad 18y agoSounds like a great event! I think some News.YC users, many attendees of the most recent Startup School, were reacting to the purposely chosen words "Startup School" in the submission title, which begged for a comparison.
