53% is nothing. Peru peaked at 260% excess mortality in February (2nd wave) and 230% in July (1st wave). My Facebook was (and is) a depressive mess of sad announcements. Source: https://opencovid-peru.com/reportes/sinad

I was well aware even by March that masks were the way to go. It was a simple lie, by e.g. the Surgeon General, in order to try to save masks (while they didn't even start ramping production of them!) But of course if a government of

Most apps require constant updates or they stop working. I had set up my iphone to only update on wifi, and was travelling for a month or so only using mobile network. When I tried to get an uber, I realized the app didn't work correct

Does anyone know how big are the constant terms here? A few years ago I studied and partly implemented an earlier (related?) work by Peng (on graph laplacians and SDD systems: https://epubs.siam.org/doi/abs/10.1137

Are you two sure WSB hasn't reached an eternal September event? I find that with 8MM subs, the signal-to-noise ratio will likely remain just too high. I've been looking for alternative subs, but besides e.g. theta gang I haven

How exactly did GameStop got a bailout? They did not issue additional shares, so didn't really got anything from this besides maybe some publicity

A lot of people swear by ggplot and other grammar of graphics tools, so I have an open question. Let's take an example from the page: ggplot(data=mpg) +\ geom_point(mapping=aes(x="displ", y="hwy", alpha="

The volatility of the Gamestop is just insane. People think it's because of the short squeeze, but it's not just that but the fact that the stock goes from $100 to $400 to $200 within the hour, and then as OP mentioned you end up

Worth noting that peer review is also a bit (or a lot slow) and not perfect, and that all peer-reviewed studies have in the past been not peer reviewed.

I am op (asked the question) and even though I don't agree with throwaway, I appreciate him having the time to respond (so I upvoted.earlier to try to offset the downvotes). Im also downvoted btw, so this goes both ways.

I wonder how all the Trump supporters on HNs (maybe 30% or so of commenters, no idea about lurkers) are reacting to this. Levadowski pardon, the spy, the swamp, etc.

I used to be a fan of Greenwald, but after seeing his failure to condemn the Rs (and Russia), got very disillusioned. Also, he is propagating lies: https://twitter.com/evanchill/status/1349097133186707457?s=2...

Same here. Feels like the forest fire stories. Every time the msrket throws a tantrum, central banks print money, and everyone is kept happy (for now). Oh, the wonders of what you can do in low inflation environments, at least for a few dec

I'm just surprised at how close the US came to stop being a democracy. A bit more planning about what to do when they breach the capitol, a few more Qanon captains across the river at Ft Myer, or a few 100ks more Trump supporters here

I find it very interesting how extremists now attempt to appear as moderate. For instance, take the submitter of the story: Says it's not worth it to fix global warming: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25358094 Sa

I started reading it circa 2008, created my account in 2009. In a way, HN is still a reflection of society, although more civil due to pg (then) or dang (now) moderation, plus the fact that a lot of users knew each other back then. Nowadays

WSJ ceased to be a serious newspaper when Murdoch bought it. But of course, almost half of the country voted for 2020 Trump, so almost half of HN probably likes him even today. So you will see this and more like this being upvoted.

A lot of people over here are very pro-trump, and just use this as a way to defend him. It's the same reason why anything non-tech gets flagged nowadays until dang removes protects the threads: they don't want to see news attackin

Hi John, Nothing to do with the two positions, but have you ever considered a markdown editor? My pipeline is markdown -> pandoc+filters -> latex, so nowadays I only use Overleaf when the papers (or the coauthors) really demands it.
