I really like the Jetbrains model. Buy a yearly subscription for the software, but you get a perpetual license for the major version of the software when your subscription is renewed.

I'm pretty sure you could fit a blockchain into 64kb of memory too. Not sure why you'd want to do such a thing though except for amusement (the reason a lot of us do anything at all).

A good portion of the mechanical wear and tear on an engine comes from starting/stopping it.

I don’t have a response to your first question - some modern e-bikes are very capable. But in many jurisdictions registering a moped is extremely easy - in MA and VT at least, it’s honor system. In MA you have to go into the RMV but don’t h

For most software positions, I’d omit the dates for school, and just note the institution and the degree you obtained. Unless it’s your first job or you’re still working on your degree. You can use dates as filler, but after 1 or 2 position

I was taught to leave the month off your start and end dates of previous positions when applying for a job. Still don’t know if this is a good idea or not, but at the very least it opens up another dialog tree with potential employers. Seem

I've played Garry's Mod on and off for almost 20 years. One of the first games I ended up buying instead of pirating, actually causing me to buy the Orange Box :) The "non-sexiness" (for lack of a better word) of the cha

I wonder why all the comments pointing this out are getting flagged. I don’t think it’s anything malicious, maybe an edge case in HN’s moderation system. Anyway, I agree, excellent code, but I worry about this guy. His website(s) have a lot

The Fenix 7 supports dual frequency GPS. That and the battery life improvements seem to be the significant differentiators between the Fenix 6 and 7. I’ve gotten very used to the Fenix UI when backpacking and have it basically committed to

Not sure why this got flagged. Anyways, I find it’s best to use they/them pronouns (or rather remain gender/pronoun neutral) when referring to people on the internet, unless their pronouns are obvious.

We might enter a time when every time a new model/compression algo is introduced, a new series of benchmark images may need to be introduced/taken and ALL historical benchmarks of major compression algos redone on the new images.

I appreciate the way you understand the terminology. However, I'm not sure everyone else understands it the same way. Although, I do admit the terms can be confusing. BTW: I don't see how 'multiplying' could refer to jus

I’m amusing myself thinking about a giant airbag for a sleeping person. I can’t think how anything like that could work. Airbags in cars work effectively by inflating near instantly in a car crash, cushioning the occupant from the near inst

Huh. 8 or 9 years ago I visited somebody in a hospital in rural India (maybe 100km from Hubli), and this was definitely not the case. A man was being ejected (after intake!) from the hospital with acute appendicitis because he and his famil

Sure, anthropomorphization is unnecessary, but IMO it’s kinda cute. It made me happy. I’m not equipped with the biology to give birth myself, so it was nice to be able to give birth virtually to a son. A son that could talk to me before he

I’m always amazed at how polarizing part 3 of Seveneves is for people. I loved the whole book, but part 3 was among my favorite of any NS book. My only complaint is that it wasn’t longer.

I pay for the Jetbrains all products pack, $250 a year. I spend on average 3-4 hours a day in their products. That $250 is pennies compared to the amount of value I create with the various JB IDEs. Good software - like IntelliJ, GoLand, etc

Ahh, I did an Algolia search just now and found the 2019 post[0] but thought that felt a bit recent for what I remember. I can't find that 2014 post, however - do you have a link? [0] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?i
