I am a solo dev for my company which is a semi profitable startup. Before I was hired the codebase was built by a hobbyist and remote workers. I was hired due to a language barrier with the remote staff. I barely have 4 years of experience

Thats also not applicable in a business setting. If you have multi million line codebase, you simply cant refactor within reasonable time. Also refactoring can cause issues wich then need further fixing and refactoring. If I touch code that

My company didn't even have time to keep the dependencies up to date so now we are stuck with Laravel 5 and Vue 2. Refactoring/Updating can be an incredible workload. Personally I'd say rewriting the whole thing would be more

Can't be held accountable for work conditions engineers dont have power over. If I dont have time to write tests, I cant be blamed for not writing tests. Especially now with hallucinating bs AI there is a whole load of more output expe

The issue is that management usually doesn't care. Personally I usually have about 3-4 days to implement something. If I can't deliver they will just look for more devs, yes. Quantity is what matters for management. New New New is

Thats not how software engineering works in a business setting though? Not a single company I have been in has the time to first fix the existing codebase before adding a new feature. The new feature is verbally guaranteed to the customers

Does SEO really matter still? I have seen a few videos that show how the SEO algorithm works a few months ago, at least googles, and you basically can't optimize in that regard.

Never had a string related bug in any programming language in 4 years. I sincerely don't know what people talk about when they claim strings are buggy? What kinda tasks do these happen in?

Its extremely easy. Just dont overthink, implement the stuff you gotta implement and move on. Simplicity generates flexibility. Its also easier to refactor if your app isnt a architectural docker mess.

Its actually a good question on who needs generics. It makes code unreadable and was never really useful in commercial products.

But do you really want to work at a company with managers that have zero technical experience? To me it always has been extremely annoying working with people that can't imagine the magnitude of work, that some "small" change

Yea lets build a whole docker setup for this little Sudoku app that never will have more than 100 users. I mean, for fun overengineering small projects can be a great learning experience but for work? Keep it simple, stupid. (In case it was

Yea my point was that people love to overcomplicate their stuff. Having a whole infrastructure for a personal project that isnt even started yet is insane.

I use Neovim on Termux as well occasionally. With the right macros it's not too bad to write on phone. Fun for little stuff and languages that do not require tons of brackets.

This is stupid though. Advent of Code Leaderbords were always full of cheaters. At least since 2020 when I first started. If you want competitive programming, AoC is not the place for that.

If real life problems were as easy and defined as AoC problems we might be able to be replaced at some point. I highly doubt you can replace software devs otherwise. Who else is going to take the blame for software issues?

I am inconveniencing my time which is important to me. I dont have to build my apps accessible to everyone as they are clearly not purposed for everyone. Whats so hard to understand with that?

Ay thanks a lot! There are some very good takes in there and I fully agree on the B2B part. Repurposing projects is also a great idea I never thought about. I appreciate the tldr!
