That was my reaction. To be fair author says: "Of the formats listed here, TIFF is probably the one most likely to still be in wide use, but it has evolved into a more specialized format for professionals, in comparison to something li

Another one that didn't make it: writing a packed binary file where the first two shorts are the width and height and then just 8 bit grayscale values. That was my favorite way to serialize images but I never had the foresight to add e

Yeah, those look pretty cool. Not sure if they could go on every bike path but would cover almost all use cases.

I'm a year-round non-e-bike commuter in Oregon. I love e-bikes but until you can ride without getting soaked it'll be successful only part of the year in most of the US. We need something between the e-bike and golf-cart style EVs

Probably has nothing to do with organic and much to do with where your stuff comes from, time of harvest, care taken in transport, length of storage, etc. Since there's a strong correlation I guess it's good to buy organic. The be

I'd say Germany is leading in "middle tech": mechanical, machinery, industrial equipment and of course cars (although that might soon be disputed). I grew up and went to university in Germany but spent all my working life in

Rarely anything new but I regularly need it for old manufacturing line equipment that just keeps running. 20 years is nothing for some of our assembly lines.

"The Americans" is not only a great classic TV series but has lots of examples of cold-war era tech and planning complex missions.

I love public transit and opt for it if I can, even if it's a bit less convenient. Only remember a few cases where Uber was the best choice, definitely Las Vegas was one of them but if I can I'll never return there anyway.

This may be hard to believe for the HN crowd but hp has been great for me (Corvallis, OR). Sure, we're not the company Bill & Dave started but current leadership has steered the boat out of the mess created by 10+ years of rocky ti

My original goal was to avoid the extra time and having to organize a ride but also the aftereffects - the last time I felt weird a day or two later (could have been a red herring). I just found it totally fascinating to see my own insides

I just had mine a couple days ago and opted for no sedation because I wanted to see what's going on. It was a bit unpleasant, at a couple spots the doc snakes the scope around some sharp bends and you can feel that inside of you. It to

That is concerning. I've heard that PSA can be produced in other parts of your body but at very low level, not enough to pass the threshold of concern. If the spikes are high and the test is reliable then there could be something lurki

I'm one data point pro PSA: at 43 I had elevated levels, biopsy, detected cancer, prostatectomy followed by full recovery. I can also attest to the anxiety about the two big Is: incontinence and impotence. Luckily I had a great surgeon
