Super interesting. Instead of going whole-hog, could we add some kind of hinting system to existing text-based systems that would make structural changes known to the VCS? Maybe also make it clear what's a comment or other insignifican

Like many others I learned vi when realistically emacs was the only other alternative on UNIX workstations. What really helped me were my coworkers who already knew vi and showed me a few tricks. Like using "." for repetitive task

Voter ID laws don't deter voters and vote suppression schemes can hurt the constituency of whoever is doing the suppressing. That makes me wonder what endgame current proponents of tightening laws and auditing results have in mind.

I was driving on I-5 between Oregon and California, seems like every other semi was Amazon. It really seems like they are turning into a logistics company more than anything.

I'd agree with that. The case size, open design, accesible FW, etc. made it really easy to add custom HW to the Apple ][, I got a lot of joy out of mine. I have to admit to being a bit jealous of the C64 and Atari kids with their bette

Great story. I remember those days well, I also remember finding every last byte of UMB, elaborate autoexec.bat files and figuring out IRQ assignments to get max functionality. Kids these days don't know how good they got it.

Came here to say the same thing. I've been in automation for a loong time and this article seems like an AI-generated jumble of buzzwords. Maybe in adjacent fields no code and IoT is a thing but in mainstream manufacturing automation I

I can sort of see the appeal of getting rid of tiny servos or solenoids but for the front derailleur it has to work super smooth to be part of an auto-shifting system like they talk about. I think other forms of gearing make more sense for

I don't think he's advocating over-consumption. The point is that if your policy goal is to re-distribute wealth you have to consider that your policies also have to make sure that the global supply chain is working smoothly. Othe

Yeah, I think this shortage will be a good lesson to a lot us used to overabundance of Everything. I also hope companies who are forced to reshore some of their business learn that the wages they have been paying are just too low.

I liked this comment from the article: Focusing on the redistribution of income and goods is natural for today’s progressives, who tend to emphasize the virtue of equality. One lesson of the Everything Shortage is: You cannot redistribute

We used OS/2 for a research project in the late 80s, it was a great experience when it was a big step ahead of Windows in every way. That got me my first job out of college, we ended up writing the Mac connectivity SW to LAN Server as

Exactly, perfect summary. Expanding on the first point, a debugger is invaluable for me if I can run my program up to a point and then use the "immediate" window to run a few API calls to see what would happen in that context.

I got my license in Germany in 1985 so I can drive a truck up to 7.5t with my license. If I remember correctly I could also add a trailer as long as the total weight is below 12t. That's real tonnes, not US tonnes so add another 10%. S
