Depends, my employer (hp) bought a buttload of them and handed them out when we had local spikes. At one point I was doing them every other day, now down to once a week. They cost around $20 for a 2 pack here.

Been using them since 1992 but at this point I would naturally turn to sockets, even on the same machine. I can't even really say why though. Named pipes are nice because they are really more like a file but at this point sockets feel

Our book club finishes the whole book before we have the discussion. You're right, an as-you-go approach would be much more challenging.

I was struck by another detail: even between "blue" jurisdictions, e.g. coastal US/cities and cities in Germany the details differ wildly. Natural immunity seems to count for something in Germany but not in the US and it'

Not sure I parsed your question exactly but I think it'll get worse because police will back off in minority neighborhoods except for the most extreme cases. That puts the average inhabitant of those neighborhoods at greater risk and g

Just anecdotal for me. During the protest phase and after we had a bunch of breakins at our and neighboring condo buildings, which was very unusual in the past. It was impossible to get the cops interested. These types of crimes probably do

It goes like this: police violence leads to increased scrutiny, city and police leaders decrease direct engagement, opportunistic low-level criminals become more active. This has definitely been happening in Portland, OR, not sure if the SF

We're reading this one for my at-work bookclub, looking forward to it. We did the Martian back when and people enjoyed it. Although easy reading it has enough depth to spark a good discussion.

Do you mean implicit clock to save the third line? Other than that SPI is about as simple as it gets. Plus there's a protocol for practically every requirement: i2c for simple slowish shared bus with clock, 1-wire shared bus without cl

Whew, that sounds awful. Part of the problem is that the subtle middle ground doesn't lend itself to stories and narratives. That's what we really need to bring around people like your dad, a way to excite people about being non-e

It's becoming more and more clear to me that the underlying issue driving much of our current crises is that people think binary - it's either "climate apocalypse" or "let's burn all the fossil fuel". Same

Back in the day we did an industry project with a customer with lots of early Symbol Wi-Fi access points and it had some weird non-IEEE 802.11-standard behaviors, some of the FW was probably written before 802.11 was done. WPA was added at
