Commercial consumer NAS boxes are notoriously bad wrt security though, even firewalled. Apple Airport Extreme is probably the only one with a decent track record (and I say this as someone who doesn't use Apple products). Eg QNAP requi

If you forget about the static concepts of compilers, input data, and program source code, you see that it's all just inputs to a computation process and it's possible to specialize the program to the input. (See also: partial eva

Many programming languages use braces, parentheses and brackets to convey structure. Javascript and C do it this way: if (foo) { bar(42, zonk()); } Guile/Clojure/etc do it this way: (if foo (bar 42 (zonk)))

Syncthing does redundancy by default, no? Just add a node. But RAID and Syncthing aren't substitutes for backups, for the same reason: no restore if your data get hosed.

For practical use you want the xvfb-run wrapper script, and use a saner mode than the default 256-color one: xvfb-run --auto-servernum --server-args="-screen 0, 1024x868x24" firefox

The article is paraphrasing a poll that was done by Harvard Institute of Politics, that had 771 18-29 year old responders. I think that is a reasonable sample size for this kind of poll.

Swap media is closing in on RAM speed at a fast clip. RAM latency has been stalled for 30 years and storage latencies are doing very well & improving due to flash. So from hardware POV, it should be a good time for swapping.

Fortunately we don't have to cover all shortfall with just PV. Increasing energy efficiency and reducing consumption (including personal car ownership) in the first world can get us there the rest of the way.

That's the rationale for the concept of CO2e, the amount of CO2 that is equivalent to the emission. So emitting 1 kg of CO2 and 1 kg of a GHG that is 2x as potent as CO2 would be expressed as emissions of "3 kg CO2e".

A 500 g packet of butter has a footprint of 4.7 kg of CO2 equivalent. If a car does 200 grams of CO2e / km, distance by car on the store trip would have to be over 23 km to match the butter.

RAID has been common in servers since much earlier than 2008. In the 2000 dot-com boom servers had RAID & often multiple CPUs. (for the less well f unded, Linux software RAID has also been pretty good since ca. 2000)
