Yeah, I've certainly seen cases where something was overbuilt and 90% of the time was wasted. But I've also worked at places where things were underbuilt (e.g 0 test environments whatsoever except prod). If there was a gun to my h

When I see big blanket statements of advice, I usually try to "unit test" them to see if they have any value. So I think of wildly different scenarios, and imagine whether this advice is useful, neutral/depends, or negative.

The article certainly paints it in that light. I also agree that it isn't clear to me how stealing information from private citizens would be a justified response for ongoing tensions in the region. Not sure why you're downvoted.

I'm not sure how it happened, but this tracks with my personal experience. 15 years ago the local stabucks had a fireplace, was meticulously clean, was busy but had seating, and generally was a place I associated with a really pleasant

Technologically seems cool, and the first use that pops into mind is "wouldn't this be funny to prank my friend?" But maybe no, it wouldn't. Maybe it'd be deeply disconcerting. We have very strong norms around hones

I've heard all of these lip-service justifications before, but I've yet to see anybody actually publish data showing how they saved any money. Would love to be proven wrong by some hard data, but something tells me I won't be

PFAs should be illegal in all food applications by now. The danger of PFAs isn't really new at this point. I'm sure if we really try hard we'd find hundreds of viable alternatives (e.g. wax? noodle straws? bamboo?), they just

Out of curiosity, where is that 150x number coming from? Is that just an off-the-cuff expression of frustration or is a real estimate from somewhere?

There's no such thing as an "everything bubble." All prices are relative. An everything bubble would basically be inflation which wouldn't justify moving any assets. You only need to move between assets when one is infla

Well, it looks to me like they look at 34 types of cancer, and found that 8 of those were increasing. So "we detect cancer better" isn't really a good theory, unless it just so happens we only have improved our detection for

Yeah but I feel like you have to admit there is a tragedy of the commons here -- there will always be more people who want to live somewhere than can realistically have a high-quality of life there.... Part of the reason San Francisco is so

Well if there is plenty of evidence, perhaps it should be linked here rather than this relatively weak meta-study that confuses the absence of evidence with the evidence of absence.

No, that's not it at all. What you would do is you would have a higher standard of proof. If you conduct a study with a 95% confidence interval that sugar doesn't increase excitement more than 5% then, you can say with 95% confide

Sorry what? This is just out of the realm of plausibility. There's a reason why academics no longer use sugar-pills as placebo, because sugar has immediate psychological effects. ------- Edit: Just read it, the blog author doesn't

My advice on giving advice: Step 0 - Ask "Would you like my advice?" Anything other than a sincere yes (not a maybe, not a patient okay, not a hmm) then don't give advice.

I wonder if these poorly-conducted studies are properly reporting any sources of funding an conflict of interest, as well as how they get past peer-review if they have relatively basic methodological flaws.

A blog post won't be indexed on google scholar for other academics to reference though. Maybe a preprint would be? In my opinion the goal is to get a record of the information and the dataset out there.
