Well, in my experience it is possible to claim Level A despite not using a certified compiler. Perhaps not if you're building a civilian airliner and you're probably still gonna have to do some kind of activities to show what goes

I think my problem with writeups like these are that they attack the problem from the wrong (or uninteresting) angle. Like, say I'm writing software for an airplane then I'm gonna be chained to DO-178C. How will using Rust help me

They seem rather ignorant of the safety aspect of high assurance software and appear more focused on security. Neither of which are ever fully solved at the software level anyway.

Interesting, thanks for the link. I just assumed those apps wouldn't be usable on dumbphones, but I guess I should look into this a bit more.

I really wish I could go back to using a dumbphone as my daily driver. Most of the things I use my phone for are basically the same as they were 15 years ago, but the implementations has changed (Spotify for music, Signal for texts) and I d

Pretty much. People are gonna find ways to write atrocious Rust code just like they have with any other language, and no-one is gonna bother to check all the unsafe blocks. Severe bugs may be less prevalent, but life as a a developer will s

No, you're right, there has been a difference in doctrine. The Russians put much more emphasis on SAMs traditionally, to enable their ground forces to operate even if they their airforce doesn't own the sky. That's why they h

Out of curiosity, are there any writeups on how the game specific hacks work? Like, how do they detect the game being run and what kind of optimization are they doing?

I thought this was gonna be yet another monospace font I wouldn't be able to tell from all the others, but fuck me as soon as the page loaded this one just spoke to me. Grabbing this for sure, well done!

This. It kind of reminds me of this meme floating around: "And then one day, for not reason at all, people voted Hitler into power." Having young men who feel they have no future is rarely a good thing for a society...

In my mind the distinction is there, but it's gonna feel arbitrary no matter what. If I had to make an attempt I'd describe the developer as someone who writes code and the engineer as someone who writes the software level spec, s

Safety really is a systems level concern. Aircraft software should implement the requirements the systems level put on it and nothing else. If the specification is somehow insufficient this is fed back to the systems level for evaluation an

I don't know, I think you could take some liberties with all of that and get away with it. London isn't that hard to imagine (perhaps with some of the more... liberal parts of the Netherlands thrown in), working some kind of Guy R

Because GTA does it better than the competition? Rockstar games are like a completely different tier in pretty much every aspect (tech, writing, immersion). Extremely well crafted worlds.

Awesome. I'm gonna hope for a game set somewhere that isn't America this time, but I doubt they could write that (and sell said writing). That being said, I'll throw my money on whatever they make day one regardless.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of DO-332 actually. I'll have to see if it's available through work. It's always interesting to think about how things can be done differently and where the tradeoffs would be. :)

Interesting, thanks. The reason I ask is that in my experience you don't malloc mid-flight so to speak (for WCET/WCRU reasons, among others), so Rust's guarantees there are largely irrelevant. It's a pretty opaque area o
