FWIW, my experience is almost exactly opposite. There’s not enough architecture in the iOS world. The norm is to stitch together the app without clear notion of the state or its transitions, everything is hidden in a giant tangle of view co

Except you can’t pull a well-typed object out of the notification. And have to use a string constant to subscribe. And if you happen to want to filter the notification stream or even gasp map over it, you’re on your own. The amount of boi

I don’t want people to “hide what community they represent”, but I also don’t want them to use that fact as a bargaining chip instead of arguments.

I used to run with the Apple Watch for a few days to test the device. I was amazed by how little calories the body needs to run something like five kilometers. As they say in the article, it’s quite hard to outrun a bad diet – a single bar

Especially when there’s already a UI precedent: the coloured status bar indicating a call, personal hotspot connection, etc. Great idea!

Optional types are a good example of how types make a system safer. Sure, they are a pretty low-level guarantee, but that still counts—and if you have an expressive type system, you can make much higher-level guarantees with types.

Swift 4 as a language is marvellous. It’s the tooling that’s still very annoying to work with – autocomplete not working, SourceKit burning CPU time, crashes, that kind of thing.

I think the point is that it’s a surprising amount of work to make all these choices right, so it’s sort of easier to pick a platform that aligns with your view on privacy by default.

Interesting. Are you sure the increase in code reliability goes down to the language and not your skills? It feels quite contrary to my experience that a lower-level language would be more reliable.

But didn’t we say the same thing about JS almost every year in the past? Only for the status quo to be obsoleted in a few months? Is the breakneck change curve slowing down finally?

BTW: A branding statement from Medium shared with Poynter says the new wordmark and branding system "reflects the unique and dynamic nature of the ideas you can find on Medium without compromising the voices and stories shared."

String interpolation will often end up crossing the barrier between NULL as an empty pointer value and "null" as an ordinary string.

You could say the same thing about many free software projects created for the ecosystem. Many of them could have been created by Apple and shipped as a part of the system. I have donated my precious time to solve problems that should have

They could solve the problem, but they are not doing it. Trying to force their hand by public shaming may work, but I don’t think it will. Volunteering the effort seems like a pragmatic approach. I would love to have a place where I could s

The big difference is that while bugs can only be fixed from the inside, the documentation can be greatly improved even without Apple’s buy-in.

I think that Elm’s deep insight into composing stateful components is that if you keep important state hidden inside components, it will always hurt .

Detailed UI state like scrollbar position usually isn’t interesting in the sense that you would need to directly respond to it, share it, persist it, etc. That’s why you don’t usually include it in your application model. State being collab

You make it sound like the Elm architecture us just OOP done wrong or by hand. It’s not. The big difference is who owns the state and who is allowed to change it. If anyone inside the object graph that makes up your app can own and freely c

Sorry about that! We have considered adding more features, but it’s impossible to do that while keeping the app reliable and simple, so it’s likely to stay this way.

It appears that you still think of a date without a time zone as relative , which isn’t right (IMHO). A Unix date is an absolute mark on the axis of time, time zones are just different “views” on this time.
