What would you do? If the ordinary array subscript produced an optional value, people would simply fall into the habit of force-unwrapping it, since the hassle of handling the spreading optionals would be too big. And throwing an unchecked

For me, the big deal about generics is that they allow the type system to cover a much bigger part of my design. Without generics, any parametrized API will erase your types and then the compiler is blind. With generics the type information

I love Objective-C, but calling it (close to) a modern language is a long stretch. The “generics” are a joke, for example. The whole type system is miles from what can be expressed (and guaranteed!) by a modern language. We got an immense a

In the long run the scientific advancements from these companies is a much higher positive than the negatives they have in the present. That’s really the main question, isn’t it?

Are you gifting the copyright as well as the right to use the logo? It’s not possible in every country for an author to waive his rights or gift the copyright. So I think it’s better to give a perpetual, open license that doesn’t restrict

To nitpick, the “both error and data” can happen, for example when the connection drops in the middle of a large response. Probably doesn’t change anything, but it’s good to know, maybe so that you don’t trap on an unexpected combination.

What I meant was that (a) companies are already spinning this as an advancement for the consumers and (b) consumers seem to be happy about it so far.

I really liked Elm a lot, but the issue for me was that composing components is a shit show. You have to add variants to the root Msg type for every single subpage and have it dispatch to the right update/view functions. Doesn’t that

Where one sees dogmatism, other may see sticking to principles. Elm is not trying to be everything for everybody. I think that’s a feature. Accepting its strange, perhaps dogmatic ways made me a better programmer, even in other languages.
