I’m from the Czech Republic and the tempo here is about the same as in Germany. When we have recently been to Taiwan, I felt like an utter slacker compared to the work/life balance there. It’s really an eye-opening experience, knowing

Long story short, no. If that data were a liability instead of an asset, it would be done yesterday.

I’m sorry, but the terminology around MVC is completely broken, to the point where it’s completely non-obvious what people mean by MVC. So I don’t understand what you mean.

…but it is the same State -> View logic. It’s not. I am familiar with Cocoa. When the model updates, the controller or the view notice and manually update the view state to match – update text fields, change colors, push new views, etc

This misses the point completely. I would love Cocoa to work the way React does, but it doesn’t. At all. The main point of React is not having to manually manage view updates . You just write a pure fuction from app state to view (State

You often have the same data types on the server and the client for data exchange. When both sides use the same language, you only write these types once and it’s impossible for the client and server implementations to differ.

Good abstraction is what gives you the simplicity, clarity and security. Abstraction is great to talk about things precisely.

But at least we can avoid unnecessary abstraction: Is this function called only from a single place? Yes? Then get rid of it. To me it makes perfect sense to have a function that’s only called from a single place. If the function represen

That makes sense if you can then write code using that trait as a more general type. http://degoes.net/articles/insufficiently-polymorphic

I guess it’s mostly a question of social networks working too well for people to care about other channels.

Can’t speak for others, but we would have no chance distributing our content digitally on Twitter or Hacker News. Or even RSS and mailing lists. We strive to find other ways, but sharing on Facebook and paying for eyeballs seems to be the o

Here in the Czech Republic, around 70 % of all people live in municipalities under 50 thousand people, and I think that’s rather the norm than an exception. Doesn’t that put local media in a different perspective?

You make it sound like lenses are a sort of a crutch, but in my opionion they are not. The idea of having a first-class, composable way to “focus” on a part of a larger structure makes a lot of sense. And can be very pretty, too – see Swift

If consent is not given then that can not bar you from service. What’s the reasoning for this? Shouldn’t I have the freedom to pick the conditions under which I offer my services, except for discrimination? Is it discrimination if I only

The key word here is explicit . Explicit Maybe/Optional types from Haskell, Swift or Rust are wonderful. After my experience with Elm and Swift, the mere thought of going back to implicit nullability everywhere hurts.

As an example, the default reaction to accessing an invalid index in a Swift array is trapping. How would you solve this “properly”? Returning an optional (ie. Maybe) would be too cumbersome and wouldn’t lead to safer code in practice.

Programs should never, EVER crash. Oh yes they should. If, for example, the alternative is to continue in an undefined state, potentially corrupting user data. Not all error conditions are recoverable.

Currently, social media users are the goods being sold, so the companies running the networks don’t have much interest in offering tools and algorithms for high quality discussion. With paying customers the situation would be very different

Currently the price we all collectively pay for these “free” services is a decrease in the sanity of public discourse. Is that really a better option?

Elm has a time travelling debugger and the ability to dump all the state transitions and replay them elsewhere, for example to reproduce a bug. Seems relevant to me.

I’d love more bikes in our town, but it’s not very flat. Is there some data on how much flat does the town have to be to get around on a bike? (I guess electric bikes change that equation a bit, but they’re still quite expensive.)

Developers love to be able to write their magical code and their clever abstractions and often forget that their code is paying the price by becoming less clear and less readable. Are you saying that it has to be that way with generics? B

I like the Elm architecture so much we have tried to do something similar in Swift on iOS. It’s a shame it’s not possible to go all the way in (it’s quite hard to find an analogy for the DOM diffing view part), but after a year of work or s
