Nice, thank you! Will definitely check out poetry now - have been avoiding it for reasons of inertia so far. :)

Totally agree with this. The guide presents a false dichotomy. The main package doesn't have to be in site-packages as the alternative to this sys.path hack. It just has to be accessible from your PYTHONPATH. Running tests as a module

When I'm just learning a new programming language or framework, I prefer to have something like create-react-app [0], django-admin startproject [1], cargo new [2], or lein new [3]. Guides like these are just full of (the wrong type of)

Thank you, your response was very informative. It got me to dive a bit deeper into some of your essays and blog posts. I learned a lot particularly from these: 1. http://www.oilshell.org/blog/2016/11/06.html

Interesting, looks like Linux users can also try out Powershell now: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/scripting/instal... It's a beefy package, though. Packaged in a docker image on top of alp

It's not about trying to pawn off inferior wares onto your customers. I make a living selling software that I write. My customers have no way of judging quickly how good my software is or even whether it solves their problems. When I&#

As it looks now, I don't see much reason to switch away from curl + jq. The thing I like about curl + jq is that I can easily switch it out for: TEMPFILE=`mktemp`; curl -s <REQUEST> >$TEMPFILE; python -c "import json; f =

Very curious - what kind of people use OSH and how many actually use Oil in OSH? I am hesitant to spend the time ramping up on something like this because, as much as possible, I try to write my shell scripts so that they can run without an

It may also be a case of different strategies for different channels. If I were a VC, I might prefer to solicit these kinds of solid, boring business ideas in an RFA and source moonshot ideas through my personal network. If I looked for moo

Why do we have such an emphasis on making our tools open source? How much does the license matter? Would it be feasible to release source code for inspection while simultaneously retaining exclusive rights to operate the software? Would tha

Why such a strong reaction against the idea? For someone who has to sell stuff, this would be incredibly valuable if executed well. It's possible to build something like this using only publicly available data about people and organiza

I mostly see myself using this as part of CI workflows or to monitor jobs that I run overnight/over the weekend. I also see it as a good way to, for example, start jobs on remote machines by sending a text message. 1/2. I can stil

This is excellent - a big fan of its scriptability via curl. I think you have the beginnings of a truly amazing developer experience here. If you're interested in monetizing this: I would pay a fee for this - say $4/month. The onl
