You can still get contactless cards from Amex at least (I'm not sure about Chase). But you have to specifically request them (and hope you can find a CS rep who knows what you're asking for). I think it's a bit of a chicken a

I don't consider my risks to be 100% covered. I don't have to pay for fraudulent charges, but I still incur substantial costs in terms of time and hassle when a card is compromised and I have to get a new one. Time on the phone wi

Good info, thanks. I'll admit, I'm pretty terrified of having to replace one of the drives in my array. I've replaced dozens or maybe even hundreds of drives in Sun, SGI and DEC storage arrays over the years, but I have a lot

I'd be curious to hear about the issues you've had with zfs. I'm running it on a fileserver in my house, and it's been solid for a few years, but my use isn't very demanding. I'd like to know what problems I sh

I agree. I have lived in cities and in the suburbs, and I greatly prefer the suburbs. I also feel that many of the points in the article make unwarranted assumptions about priorities, or are based on opinion. European cities feel “cozy” an

I think I brought this up last time there was a post about Your Mechanic. But I am still curious about it. I wonder how much their data is skewed by the fact that they're a third-party mechanic. I don't think they necessarily see

To what benefit on their part? They don't manufacture tires, so they don't profit if you have to replace them more often. As another commenter pointed out, this is quite common on performance and luxury vehicles because it has han

Silicon Valley is so realistic that I stopped watching a few episodes into the first season. I was going through a rough and very stressful time at work, and the show was reminding me too much of that rather than being an escape (as I usual

The good part of this is that it should strongly incentivize developers to make sure their subscribers are happy. Otherwise they won't make it to the second year.

I dislike Oracle because their products (at least the ones I've used) are horrible to use, and insanely expensive. Edit: I'm talking about the Oracle database products, not Java, the stuff they acquired with Sun, etc.

By the way, this is the same reason I lock my door even though there’s a glass sidelight right next to it. Any burglar who wants to get into my house can do it in about 5 seconds by breaking that sidelight. But that doesn’t mean there’s no

No, but I disagree that running sshd on an alternate port is an arbitrary layer. It is PROVEN that it prevents the automated mass scanners from even attempting to login. This you admit yourself when you mention the reduction in log noise. Y

I’ve owned several houses. The more recently I bought, the LESS I care about the value of the house. It’s just numbers on paper. Money isn’t at stake until I’m trying to sell, which I’m certainly not looking to to do if I just recently boug

I don’t care what the value of my home is until I am ready to sell, and I don’t plan to do that for a long time. I do care if the qualities that lead me to choose to live where I do change. Additional density can drastically change those qu

Can you give me an example of a real-world worm that has scanned every port on every system on the internet? I haven't seen one, but if it exists, I'd be curious to see it. I'm speaking based on the actual exploits I've

Even making minor changes to the Wordpress URLs from the defaults is enough to avoid getting hit by most (if not all) of the automated exploit I see on a day to day basis.

For most of us, the threat is the exact opposite of a dedicated attacker. It's an opportunist (or automated system) that doesn't need to compromise every system on the Internet. It just needs to compromise enough. You can compro

Right. The voice assistant doesn't currently solve a real problem I have, except in a few limited situations (in the car, when my hands are full, etc.). And even then I don't trust it enough to do the right thing.
