I love that this is the (correct) response here. /r/Apple is full of morons that read the press release and honestly believe making this system scan the whole file system is impossible.

This. Everything that is happening now is downstream of some terrible laws.

If that’s how they play then the only winning move is to respond in kind. >shadowy government affiliated agency abuses its role of protecting children to install malware on a billion devices

So what are we going to do about it? I have a large user base on iOS. Considering a blackout protest.

Wow, you have a lot of faith in our legal system that is >90% plea deals.

You can’t “save the children” by building a dystopia for them to grow up in.

I’m furious. My top app has 250,000 uniques a day. I’m considering a 24h black out with a protest link to apple’s support email explaining what they’ve done. I wonder if anyone else would join me?

Apple is putting the entire database on every phone to scan and promising to only do it for certain situations. They can alter that deal at any time, you’d have to be a fool to think that isn’t their plan. On-device scanning of “encrypted”

Even then, say you trusted Apple. Nobody signed up/purchased an iPhone trusting random 3rd parties/CSAM aggregators.

In the press release Apple says they are using hashes of hashes. Apple has no visibility into the original image that generated the hash, so the gov can compromise the list at the source and Apple would have plausible deniability.

Apple’s press release is a lie. iCloud stuff already isn’t E2E and they already scan. This system is built exactly to surveil the entire contents of your mobile device, cloud enabled or not. Apple has burned years of social capital in 2 day

How long until a hacker uses ML to generate collisions against those hashes?

Interesting? You think it will be interesting? False positives in this case cause swat teams to be sent to people’s houses.

I wonder why you don't have a miner-hot-water heater? Use energy to mine and the waste heat to keep your tank warm.

It's hard to feel sorry for these companies when they have neglected security for so long. This outcome was inevitable, and hitting the bean counters where it hurts (financial bottom line) is the only way to effect change.

This is like reading that Apple is transitioning to ARM desktops and asking who will pay for it.

These people and their employees need to be on terrorist watch lists, their assets and passports frozen, domains seized etc. It is an absolute joke that the “Justice” department allows these organizations to operate freely and uncontested.

Tourist flights to the moon will be $1-2 mil/person in 2035 ($1000 or so in today’s money). College students will get to visit and set up their own experiments as part of their billion dollar tuition.

Starship is going to launch the equivalent of 1000 Hubble’s with 10 years. You’re thinking too small, this constellation is part of what enables you to someday go to space yourself and have your own observatory on the dark side of the moon

Exactly. 350+ million people get screwed when the government triples the money supply, but relatively few people use crypto to buy coke and that’s suddenly what it’s all about.

Imagine having your cryptocurrency wallet’s private key exfiltrated in this way. Hell, it wouldn’t surprise me if a few less than ethical NSA hackers are doing exactly that in their spare time.
