Imagine I've installed CrowdStrike under the assumption that it makes my system more secure. Why would I want the OS to allow the system to boot up in a less secure state by providing a prompt for that? Most users will just click which

But the blame wasn't misplaced before. People keep saying that macOS does things better by forcing third parties out of the kernel and instead offering APIs to do the same work in userspace. Microsoft tried to do exactly this for secur

Also anyone who's plugged in a Razer product has seen the driver download mechanism in action. Razer drivers include the installer for their Synapse software so you get the installer prompt when plugging one in. As annoying as I think

I love the feeling of finding the beauty of how a puzzle resolves. The hand set puzzles are as much a challenge to player as they are a demonstration of the setter's own skill and cleverness.

And while it is being used now to simply reference the article, RTFA was originally used in the same way as RTFM. A way of expressing frustration to a commenter who should have read the fucking article first.

Updates do get tested. Windows updates can be held and selectively rolled out when a company is ready. As far as I can tell though, CrowdStrike doesn't give companies the agency to decide if updates should be applied or not.

This is very true. Line merges do not always work well. There used to be a tool called SemanticMerge which was able to handle merging code cleanly even when the code had been refactored. It saved me quite a bit of work a handful of times (b

If the data was always encrypted, then simply discarding the keys effectively means the drive is left filled with random data. Also, NVMe drives can be sent the sanitize command which can erase/overwrite the data across the entire phys

Feels to me like that was a deficiency in the package management tools. Like if your requirements file could define a global alias, it would allow people who want that easy one-line change to install pillow as PIL. But everyone else who was

I have to look up PIL every time I use it to remember if I install PIL and import pillow or install pillow and import PIL. Imports can be aliased, so why allow this mismatch at all? PyPI should have enforced that each package contains one t

Because it's an extra expense to support it with basically no value. The reason to give a TV a network connection would be to use the applications built into the TV... ones that you don't need if you're using an Apple TV. And

That's so weird. Normally I don't want my OS changing what is booted into on a whim, but going back into the same OS for cases like these just seems like sane behavior to me.

What a bullshit quote. Ukraine didn't join NATO and Russia took Crimea anyway. And now they're attempting to take Ukraine. Russia is only afraid of NATO because they know it will stop them from taking the territory that they want.

I like that UEFI means I don't have to worry about bootloaders clobbering each other when multiple operating systems are installed on the same drive. They can all register into UEFI, rather than competing for the MBR.
