I find the clustering approach in A510 very intriguing. Why run the low power cores in pair? Is this because android _really_ struggles on single core due to the way it was designed? So you basically need two cores even when mostly idle?

A lot of v8.x features were added to fix mistakes in v8. v9 brings a bunch of completely new stuff, specially in the security department.

In general for moving from v8 to v9, I think 16% is extremely pessimistic. Removal of aarch32 has huge implications. And this is not limited to CPU but also touches MMU, caches and more that in v8 had to provide aarch32 compatible interfa

X1 is _not_ ARMv9 and there is not even a comparison with M1 on that page. X2 is not even out yet, you have no idea how it may perform. Why has every post on HN drift into blindly praising an unrelated product?

M1 is ARMv8.4 v9 has a bunch of neat features that improve security and performance (+ less baggage from ARMv7 which also improves area and power)

Google open source engagement was already "throw over the wall" style before this. I assume things will only get worse now.

> Federighi said the ability to install software on Macs that isn’t vetted by Apple meant more malware was hitting its desktops than its phones. This is really low. How could that even help, the issue was in apples own software.

It's hard to know how common this is. But I have personally witnessed the L4 top folks talking down someones novel contributions as "this is nothing knew, you should have used L4, we did this stuff 10 years ago" and making a

The point of that is to make you click and maybe by mistake give them their consent. We already had do-not-track in the browser, why do you think companies refuse to honour it?

Well, who do you folks think should be fined next? Also, can't we just agree that "Legitimate interest" is noncompliance and fine BBC too while at it?

Let me explain my comment: For a while it was really hard to do something in the OS, security or embedded system field of it didn't align with the L4 way of doing things. This harmed progress, and in particular young researchers with n

I think this is good for everyone. This team and associated groups around the world (a famous researcher once called it "the German army") have been receiving a lot of grants, been too dominant in conferences and to be honest have

I think you are right in your critique, but you cannot then draw your own conclusions without providing some data that at least partially supports it. Yes, we need to have a ground truth with regard to violence committed. But that data is

Enterprise Thinkpads easily last 10+ years. Although you will need to change the battery at some point. I think my current work laptop is 6-7 years old. My backup laptop is 11 years old.

Hydrogen power cells have a number of advantages. For one they are more efficient while being much more environmental friendly than batteries (which to be perfectly honest is basically an environmental disaster on wheels). Also, much faster

Sorry answer: no. Long answer: no. you can't get the precision needed to correctly drill and align the 5 boards (for 6 layers) at home. If you can, this means your boards are probably simple enough to not need 6 layers.

Flatcam generates gcode and should work with most engravers, routers and 3d-printers with minimal tinkering. You can buy devices 10x cheaper from China, but there are very few dedicated to PCB milling.

This software is awesome. And it can also be used for so many other things than PCBs. For example, I have used it with vertical printers in past. With that said, I wish there were more cheap hardware to go with it. Come on Shenzen, do your

We are not comparing M1 to 64-core threadrippers. We are comparing 8-core M1 to 8-core AMD and intel. Which are faster? AMD by a huge margin, then Intel and Apple. Which are more power efficient? Probably apple by a wide margin. But we need

Technically, Samsung jumped into this market already in 2012 (Samsung Series 3 chromebook had an exynos CPU). I think the real news here is the AMD collaboration.

Not necessarily, I need a _proper_ benchmark against AMD 5xxx to belive that. Edit: proper means not using one M1 big core for single threaded performance benchmark, only the little cores in a battery test and then combine those two number

You have been able to buy ARM windows/ Linux/chromeos devices for years now. What makes this one more important? Neither this or M1 are market leder in raw performance or power efficiency either.
