We are not comparing M1 to 64-core threadrippers. We are comparing 8-core M1 to 8-core AMD and intel. Which are faster? AMD by a huge margin, then Intel and Apple. Which are more power efficient? Probably apple by a wide margin. But we need better benchmarks to confirm that. Many I have seen so far just do automated Web browsing or YouTube videos until battery dies. The latter is not even CPU-bound, the former is mostly a browser and display efficiency benchmark. Most likely neither use the Firestorm cores much. Does power efficiency even matter? My answer would be yes for laptops/tablets and no for desktops which are already running comfortably below 20W (see for example Asus PN51 series).
