A spec bug is just as bad as a code bug! Declaring a system free of defects because it matches the spec is sneaky sleight-of-hand that ignores the costs of having a spec. The actual testing value is the difference between the cost of writi

I'd be good with the guidelines: 1. Use a vocabulary of at most two emojis in output (e.g. one for success, one for failure). 2. Any information conveyed by an emoji should be redundantly conveyed by text.

I could only make it for 30 seconds before I couldn't stand the sharp corner in the animation curves any longer and opened the Dev Tools to try to fix the easing! :)

I love languages, but I've been scared off of Finnish because I have heard that it has impossibly complicated grammar. Is this true? Or is there a logic to it that can be easily understood?

First Past The Post is the cause of many of the political ills in the United States, and I used to think RCV was the answer. But it is a disaster: 1. The rate of spoiled ballots goes way up, and disproportionately so in lower-income areas

This one simple information-theoretic principle is an effective guide for user interface design: Things that are the same should look the same, and things that are different should look different. Your UI conveys information to the

Python is designed to be "boring" (in other words, straightforward and easy to understand). It is admittedly less so, now that it has gained many features since the 2.x days, but it is still part of its pedigree that it is suppos

"Hallucination" is also a dangerous level of anthropomorphization. It's sensational; it implies a fanciful level of imagination and visualization that isn't there. "Fabrication" is a much more accurate and neu

No, dark mode is a red herring. I used IntelliJ because it had better functionality and wasn't incredibly slow (only somewhat slow). User experience matters. Most of user experience has nothing to do with dark mode. Dark mode is pur

I'm shocked to hear you describe it as "not bloated". Eclipse took many seconds to start up, responded slowly to typing, and used huge amounts of memory. It was by far the slowest of any application I had used. I used it w

"Change block type" makes more sense then "Change block language". "Language" sounds like it could mean English, French, etc. whereas "block type" is unambiguous.

I don't understand. I'm looking at Kabel and it has lots of overshoots. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kabel_(typeface)#/media/File:K... https://www.freefonts.io/kabel-font-free/

Yes, everyone says that. It's parroted so often that people think it's true. But have you _seen_ it? Please show me an example of type that looks more _uniformly sized_ with overshoots than without, and I'll agree with you.

I doubt the designer of the font in that image was trying to make the letters look different sizes for fun. If that was the goal, though — great, mission accomplished! You say it's wrong to judge overshoots by these examples because t

The variation in topmost parts that you're describing is called an "overshoot". See the examples in my other comment: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38449636 The idea that overshoots are necessary to cr

Any amount of overhang is too much. It makes the edge of the container look bumpy and messy. Even if you think it looks stylish, it nonetheless creates a semantic distraction: it makes paragraphs that start with quotation marks look differ

Overshoots are an unfortunate holdover. In many fonts, "C"s and "O"s are too big and "A"s are too tall. I mean, just look at this: https://typography.guru/uploads/monthly_2020_01/ove

The intuition is that a branch consists of a line of commits off of a trunk. Like, you know, what the word "branch" means in real life. But in git, a branch doesn't "contain" anything. It is just a pointer to a si

Sharing URLs is a fundamental operation. Without a URL, you can't text someone a webpage, refer to it in a social media post or a tweet, or link to it in a document. You can't make links. Sure, you can browse the web without it.
