"do we need a dist'd protocol, not a central service?" Short answer: yes. The communication model/platform has viability, but implementation(s) would be what makes or breaks it. Obvious I know, but it bears repeating.

I may be biased* but have you looked at SugarCRM? * I am biased, as I do in fact, work at SugarCRM. That said, I used the product before I came to work here, so I actually think its pretty good.

While that is a very interesting point, she'll have to leverage it soon and with some impressive finesse to make it have any practical effect. It's still going to be one hell of an uphill climb.

I have to admit my enthusiasm is near nil. It sounds like not only the trite reinforcement of the "user as marketable commodity audience" but it just smacks of mild desperation to monetize anything it can to support its now publicly trad

"Provacative" = a pretty good euphemism for "linkbait". "Aggressive SEO" is another. I am unapologetically from a view where that kind of PT Barnum grade nonsense didn't square well with real journalism. I still cringe at it.

Frankly, given how well they've managed every other FOSS element in their charge, I have no doubt that this is not only NOT a "better" alternative to CentOS (disclosure: I have no particular love for CentOS, but you do know what you are get

I didn't miss the point; I disagree with it. Yes, it "takes a village" to bring that technology to a marketable life, but ultimately the large part of that chain isn't doing the "innovative" part (the actual out the box conceptualizing to

The user "confusion" was caused by Facebook's actions, and the blowback is the only non-confused element; people don't like having things like that altered out from under them. It makes them "confused, or angry or litigious.

I worked in "anti-piracy" (read: a DMCA chop shop) for a long time. This is one more bit of idiocy that will continue to push people to seek alternative outlets than the big content guys. In the last twenty years we've seen the nominal ri

I'd agree with this. Ellison definitely seemed to have more of a steady hand when he had Ray Lane as COO; a textbook pragmatist, Lane was the diametric opposite of Ellison, and the balance between the two worked really well.
