Regarding Freelance visas, some countries (e.g. Germany [1]) require you to have local clients. So not an option for self-employed/indies. Would be nice to have similar info about countries that doesn't require you to work for som

Hear, hear, but if we follow this route, can't we just agree that the browser is already present in the system and reuse it? "WebView apps" that is... If there is no - we can just show the prompt to install that single instan

A friend at FANG who moved from IC to management describes it as a relaxed and easy cushy job compared to being an engineer and doing real work.

Interesting, how do you check/respond for such HN posts - do you take in count the upvotes/visibility on the front page, or you just scan "Tell HN: *Stripe*" posts even with zero upvotes?

Making it clear in the code itself that something is platform specific is useful as well. Also, I'd say such stubs and extra files would clutter the project.

When it comes to cross-platform code, you build for several platforms, so the block is active (for particular platforms) and maintained.

AFAIK it is exactly that - fine for such faceless corps, not individuals. I've seen this across many "cultures".

Agree except the last example - the clarity of intent that you want a conditional compilation is lost. Also, non-optimized debug builds are affected.

Can you please point out the differences compared to other books for the same topic? Thanks!

It was intended to be broad :) Followup questions: 1. How does one produce a prototype? e.g. if you're in need for some custom part - do you contact to some manufacturer/factory, provide them some CAD files, etc... ? 2. Same quest

I've commented regarding "bailing the language", i.e. it was as a writer, not as a developer. Scott mentions himself that he is not a dev, and there is nothing wrong with this: https://www.artima.com/articles&

To clarify, Scott never was a practicing programmer, but a book writer who capitalized on quirky details of C++. As he explained, there is less need of such books nowadays due to the vast availability of resources on the web.

Besides, if the prose would have been preferable over symbols, we'd be writing e.g. "an unknown number of apples summed up with an unknown number of pears equals to one hundred entities" instead of "x + y = 100" in

Code is not a prose. C-like syntax is much easier to read compared to Ada/Pascal's text blobs.

That is when agreeing on some fixed nbr of days, i.e. fixed price. In case it is indefinite contract without upfront estimations, day would be expected to be a full day, i.e. back to hourly.

wxPython is great. wxPython is the best and most mature cross-platform GUI toolkit, given a number of constraints. The only reason wxPython isn't the standard Python GUI toolkit is that Tkinter was there first. -- Guido van Rossum
