Which implementation of Lisp did you use and how did you build/deploy the code? How idiomatic the code was? e.g. was it C-like code but in S-expressions? (imperative, for loops, in-place modifications, no high level abstractions, etc... but I guess this also might count as "idiomatic Lisp" in some circumstances)
- lisper 5y agoBack in the day different submissions used different Lisps. Some used CL, some used Scheme. Unfortunately, I don't recall the details, and I can't find my records (this was over 20 years ago). If I do come across them I'll post a followup here. I can tell you this: I currently have a consulting gig where I help maintain a tool for designing state-of-the-art ASICS which is written in Allegro Common Lisp. It is definitely competitive with C in terms of run-time speed.
- analognoise 5y agoCan you tell us more about the tool? I love baroque EDA tools. It's a problem.
- lisper 5y agoNot a lot without breaking my NDA. But there was a public talk given by its author, Patrick Bosshart, a few years ago at a Bay Area Lispers meeting: https://thewikihow.com/video_oGQd-suLvzQ https://thewikihow.com/video_oGQd-suLvzQ
- vindarel 5y agoWe spoke about this recently on /r/lisp: https://allegrograph.com/press_room/barefoot-networks-uses-franzs-allegro-cl-to-drive-artificial-intelligence-in-networks/ https://allegrograph.com/press_room/barefoot-networks-uses-f... - https://www.reddit.com/r/Common_Lisp/comments/osnsgz/intels_programmable_ethernet_switch_is_developed/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Common_Lisp/comments/osnsgz/intels_...?
- klyrs 5y agoI recently learned lisp, and did some macros to optimize some functions that were getting called billions of times a day. I compared the output of a common case (compiled by SBCL) to hand-written C (which I've been using a very long time). The lisp was generating equivalent or better assembly than GCC. So I'm a fan.
