Incorrect. When people talk about kernel memory, they are talking about pages marked as supervisor in the page tables for a particular process. That is not "anything in memory."

No it doesn't. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 forces them to honor the warranty unless they can prove that the non-OEM part caused the fault.

Regarding 3. It's rumored in the chip design community that NVidia designed an x86 CPU and got as far as engineering sample silicon but the project was cancelled because they couldn't work out the licensing.

My experience agrees with yours. Many big-budget teams use a hardware emulator like the Palladium XP or the similar Synopsis device. Both built from FPGAs. Hardware emulators are expensive, but a single mask respin at 7, 10, or 16nm is even

Corporations have twisted community politics to make such things very difficult. In my community, a municipal fiber optic network was built throughout the area but lobbying and politics made it nearly impossible to finish, so there are very

You will see stacked memory and silicon interposers, but you won't see main memory on the CPU die. DRAM is based on an array of what is called "trench capacitors." The fabrication process is sufficiently different that they d

The front ends were covered by plastic wrap but I am certain they were Model 3 by the shape of the headlights and the overall length of the car. I regret that I didn't get a picture. I assume they are press cars.

Not that it means much, but I saw a semi trailer full of new Model 3 on I-80 heading east near Des Moines Iowa today. All of them were black and still had factory wrap on the panels.

I highly recommend a visit to the Living Computer Museum if you find the time. I had a few hours to spare on a Seattle visit last summer and Bruce was happy to show me the CDC 6500 and his other work.

It doesn't take much time to learn to hand solder SMD. We teach 200 students to do it every semester at UIUC in the EE senior design lab. Our rule of thumb is that if it has pins that are not flush to the bottom of the package you can

Fully automatic tool flows give lower quality results than tools+trained engineers. Most of the problems are NP-Hard. It's an active area of research.

Just a nitpick, but Bob Berenz is an electrician not an electrical engineer. Electrical engineering is firmly rooted in modern physics and an educated electrical engineer would not need "help with the math." Out of all engineering

Aside from the obvious problems in your comparison. Moore's Law says nothing about frequency. The "rule" that changed around 2006 was Dennard scaling. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennard_scaling#Breakdo

A system built with the same peak flops using GPUs would actually be more useful than what they built. The Sunway TaihuLight processing elements have 64KB scratchpad, no data cache, and have less memory bandwidth than Nvidia Fermi (7 years

Moreover, the nation was able to debate (and protest) segregation while, at the same time, go to the moon and build the foundations for the computer revolution (among other things.) We can worry about bathrooms AND be builders.
