No. It's not realistic to get an improvement that way. FPGAs can provide improvement in some important cases but the system design (software and hardware co-design) is radically different. You can't expect to iterate your way ther

I started college for the first time at 35 years old, and finished earlier this year after getting a BS CS, BS EE, and MS ECE. After 3 semesters at a community college, I transferred to a competitive engineering school (UIUC). My experience

Nobody with any credibility claimed that Macs don't crash pre-OSX (the 1990s). They crashed and froze all of the time. That's why everyone was begging for an all-new operating system.

A lot of Commodore users switched to the IBM PC because they wanted the same machine at home and at work. My father, for example, picked up an IBM XT but later also bought an Amiga as a second computer because the XT never really replaced t

None of the other 6502 machines could compete with Commodore in a price war because Commodore owned MOS technologies. The C64 was all custom chips, which is why it was much cheaper than other machines with similar capability. Apple may have

Not only is it chaos for battery life, web push notifications are almost entirely spam. The web should have never added them in the first place. I’m glad that Apple stands against that crap.

This is a false equivalency because in a bootcamp most of the learning is in class. In a CS degree program most of it is not. At a top university, students put in 60 hours a week for 16 weeks every semester.

C didn't take over from Basic. Basic was used by the end user because it was free with the machine. It wasn't used by that many software engineers. Most of the software made for the early personal computer (8-bit era) was written

I paid for my own travel for an interview once. I wasn't happy about it but I thought it would be a good excuse to visit a new city for the weekend. I'll never do that again. The cheapskates that wouldn't pay for travel offer

I stumbled across a planning map during my time at University of Illinois. It was marked showing 50, 75 and 100 year expansion possibilities. The land supporting 100 year expansion is already owned by the university and leased for commercia

You find these jobs through word of mouth and professional networking. There aren't a lot of people doing this work, and most of them know each other (with 1 or 2 degrees of separation.) It's hard to cold approach a company and ge

A packaging facility is not a fab. It doesn't really give them any advantage in reverse engineering the silicon over someone that buys the end product and de-packages the die.

Most of the questions are appropriate to ask when an offer has been extended (but not yet accepted). There are plenty of high paying jobs at companies that can answer these questions.

I spent 10 years doing web development that eventually lead into a few years of systems and network programming before I went to college for a CS degree. Many CS problems were still challenging even with all of that experience.

Prototyping using TTL chips to validate the logic design was still common throughout the 1970s. 100 TTL chips is pretty small. The Motorola 68000 team published several papers that are still available through IEEE that describe the design p

I'm going to nitpick. Instruction sets matter as long as caches are fixed size. The real benefit of x86 is that the instruction encoding is very dense, making the L1 cache more effective. There is not an x86 emulator in software. Micr
