Yeah, same for enums in Swift. Although with classes in Swift it's not quite like a runtime GC. Static code is inserted to retain and release. Afaik the arc optimizer uses an ownership model to optimize placement of retain/release

Not true. Swift uses value semantics for structs and enums, arc for classes. The arc optimizer afaik is able to remove atomics when it can determine code is not used for multi threading too.

Pythonic Rust you’re speaking of sounds an awful lot like Swift.

It’s a shame that swift isn’t brought up more often in conversations around Rust and borrow checker mental overhead. From what I understand swift gets pretty close to the rust model (and even closer with some of the newer move and ownershi

Performance with Rosetta on macos is good enough for most games that shipped for x86 macos. With a decent enough graphics driver implementation it should be feasible to grab the Linux version of Rosetta and use that to play games. A lot of

Very little discussion of swift and how the current work on C++ Interop is in many ways a peak into what carbon and others may be in several years.

There's probably more people using WhatsApp securely in authoritarian hellholes and nightmarish war zones around the world than many of the alternatives you are thinking of combine. Personally I wouldn't use any chat service for s

You’re calling out FB here but they’re one of the few to have rolled out similar backup encryption for WhatsApp messages and that was quite a while ago at this point. I think FB really wants data about your behavior but based on what they’r

The last sentence I wrote agrees with what you just said. The great writers are rarely good sources of tech commentary and even moderately decent tech contributors are rarely good writers. I’m not sure what you’re trying to start here but

Totally. And when the coverage on tech is this way it practically degenerates into tabloid journalism. It’s not even useful journalism. It’s just clickbait entertainment for dorks that enjoy reading about the doom of tech.

I think the most enraging thing is that the article is using the term “computer science” graduate as a label for all tech workers. If you’re a bright talented CS graduate you’re going to find a good job with good pay even in this environmen

This isn’t the case anymore with WhatsApp. Backups to iCloud and google drive are optionally fully encrypted. You have the choice of storing the decryption artifacts on facebooks servers (which are held on a Secure Enclave) or to backup the

ObjC is more dynamic than people think. See things like swizzling and non-fragile instance variables. ObjC object orientation is closer to what folks on Java and C# consider the job of reflection.

Not many use an actual c/c++ compiler (clang) to generate language native calling convention wrappers for calling into C/ObjC code (not sure how well c++ interop works these days).

Dude you’re literally illustrating Swifts strength here. The whole point is to have a safe easy to use language that reuses existing system libraries.
