I believe some of that is 'sleep debt', after a few weeks you tend back to 7-8h.

Define 'proper' mobile view. How can the designer know how the user is viewing their site? On a cheap device with low contrast? At an awkward angle at arm's length while trying to keep the baby asleep? Trying to read somethin

For this article? Most of it, because the animations annoyed all the human readers so much they closed the tab.

Should we really be comparing the two genders at all? Is it possible to just set minimum standards - "must be able to run x km in y minutes", "must be able to get x% of rounds on target at y m" - and then accept anyone w

Are TV boxes really a growth market though? This looks kind of interesting, but most new TVs already have Netflix, Amazon, iPlayer etc. At $149/199 it's not exactly in Chromecast territory, either.

I remember looking round a local pre-school and being horrified that they had the kids all sat down quietly on the carpet while the 'teacher' stood up front holding up flash cards with shapes on them reading out the names.

I thought that too. I'd love to get more sleep: being woken once or twice a night and then having to get up before 6am to look after the kids or go to work makes that a bit tricky.

What I'd really appreciate (as one of those people who's read LYAH and is struggling to get going with real code) is a Haskell equivalent of Effective Java or Effective C++.

I think the bigger problem is this: 1. Open Passbook on your iPhone - before boarding a bus or tram/as you approach a gateline. 2. Place your finger on Touch ID to authorise the upcoming payment. 3. Touch it on a yellow card reader wit

In my experience, a combination is best. Reading gives you the broad scope, doing gives you detail, repetition and context.

Possibly this is just Apple pushing the burden of proof onto the developers? They could have had their app reviewers go through every app one by one and try to understand the context, or they can do this and force the developers that care t

Embedded yes, but modern mobile is miles away from this. ~1GHz dual core, triple issue out-of-order CPU with 512MB-1GB RAM and maybe 10-20GB storage? That was a reasonable desktop PC not that many years ago.

Most Nintendo games still seem to be locked at 60Hz (sometimes 30 maybe?). Look at the fuss when people realised that Mario Kart 8 dropped to 59Hz sometimes ;-)

I just started looking at Standard ML so I could understand the examples in Purely Functional Data Structures. There's something very pleasing in the simplicity of its syntax. Anybody have experience in applying it to larger problems?

I think one problem is that Agile gives a numerical value to how much work has been done: story points. Management get addicted to getting more story points, and any push back from developers that would lower the number in the short term is

You're eliminating the first part of the flight, so the rocket just has to provide the delta-V for orbital insertion, not lift the fuel to do that from sea level. The Tsiolkovsky equation suggests that's going to be a big saving:

If you travel, it's one more thing to carry. Plus, I occasionally forget to plug the phone in to charge at night. My current smartphone makes it through two days without charging, though.
