I ended up using the solution from http://www.virtualhere.com/ The server runs fine even on a raspi 2, to which I switched after having some problems running it on a beaglebone black.

TL;DR: It doesn't work. The project has been abandoned, the last update is >4 years old. Don't waste your time. Two weeks ago I have had to implement a solution that, for technical reasons, required a usb/ip implementation
