CAISO hits about 100gCO2e/KWh during the day. And I run a solar surplus that I don't put back on the grid. I'd be really happy if there were a good way for me to turn excess electricity into something I could use later. Maybe

I trip over coal in folks' backyards in Kentucky. You don't need more than hand tools to get at it.

From a thermal physics and material science perspective, yes, bigger is definitely better. But there's a lot to be said of the value of being able to mass-produce a product in a factory and ship it in nearly ready-to-use state to its d

What is your objection? The charts are all various fractional contributions to LCOE, which already captures and normalizes for things like plant life. You could argue that the size of the pie should be scaled for the total LCOE, but that do

I live within a 15 minute drive of both Google's and Apple's headquarters but was in the same situation - no broadband available. I organized my neighbors, we trenched, laid fiber, and now we all have 10g/10g service.

It's also just bad English. It's both more verbose and less precise than what it replaces. If I walk down the street in SF, I've experienced homelessness. But I'm not necessarily homeless. Unfortunately the same people w

There's a wide gap between zero regulation and a bureaucracy that always says 'no'. A lot of our problems right now are the result of 'no'. Nationally we're short almost 4 million homes because zoning law has s

Regardless of who you are in the government, the safest answer to anything is no. Permit housing? No. Permit power lines? No. Permit a nuclear plant? No. Permit an aviation fuel? No. Permit cross-laminated timber? No. Nobody gets fired for

I hope that if V2G happens we'll start seeing electricity arbitrage from Santa Clara to nearby communities. We desperately need competition in that market.

They haven't been $0.12 in PG&E territory since ~2010. Seems like the data source must be very misleading.

Where does the pricing data come from? The page for my own utility, PG&E, says the average residential rate is around $0.12, but no plan exists anywhere close to that. Residential plans start at $0.32.

Folks around here point to that scapegoat a lot, but our local vacancy rate is <3%, suggesting that foreign speculation is not a real issue.

Indeed it happens all the time, especially in the NIMBYest of places (e.g., CA and NY). The results speak for themselves. Are new residential high-rises getting built in Manhattan at a rate which is commensurate with demand and keeping pric

Projects that don't pencil don't get built. Constraints are costs and reduce the number of projects that make sense. There is only one way out of our housing crisis and it's removing constraints to construction. The biggest o

I'd support of a constitutional amendment that makes housing (any form, from a farmhouse to a high-rise) a by-right land use across the entire United States.

What is your objection, specifically? Is it that canvases are finite? That the default finite size is a paper size? That the background is white? Something else? I have a lot of complaints about inkscape, but this wasn't one of them.

Cost plus isn't used just at NASA. It's even more evil in other arenas, like electricity in California. Our regulators allow for a fixed profit margin for opex and a higher fixed profit margin for capex. This has the twin effects

I got 14 residents of Los Altos Hills to join me to ask for changes to local zoning law. The council completely ignored us. You have to be on the council, along with a like-minded majority. It'll be a full time job for all of you.
