I wouldn't be surprised if Watson couldn't come up with the correct question (answer). It seems semantic, not computation-based like wolframalpha.

It's also been shown that you can maximize the throughput of a highway if the speed limit is 45mph. Too high, and you need to increase the space between cars. Although 55mph != 45mph, it's pretty close. It also doesn't serve the individual,

I don't know how reddit works exactly, but I notice that they generally have a few "hidden" comments in the tree. I assume this is to prevent this phenomenon. If your comment is significantly worse than the rest of an active thread, it shou

Eh. Prototype seemed revolutionary when it was first being developed: adding prototype functions to objects & HTML nodes? Crazy! Now it's silly. Closure still seems random.

The book [1], was excellent. It introduces several different techniques for extrapolating from large datasets (machine learning). The book uses python, but obviously you can port the code to the language of your choice. Some topics it doesn

As much as I agree with his point, his America vs. Russia shtick is grating and distracting.

Exactly. HN has grown. And yes, there are more "bad" stories for everyone. But at the same time, there are more and more excellent stories that make it worth it.

Crockford used to prevent hotlinking to his JSON library (its now on github) in an interesting way: right at the top there was an alert() line that you had to remove before using. This would probably be the best way to transition. If they a

The geoloc thing is very creepy . If I'm on this site, I don't really like the idea that it knows exactly where I am (even if not exactly ). It might be better to have a button/link to enable it.

He does have to make and ship 18,000 watches. I assume he planned for a lower quantity initial run, so his margins are probably pretty high now. The "fixed" costs of initiating manufacturing are probably the biggest component.

Maybe there just aren't enough awesome articles out there for you? Otherwise, if you see something you'd like to read on HN, submit it! If that isn't successful, then you can really start complaining.

You could embed a link into the page and/or add a keyboard shortcut. Another idea: don't censor the author & the user's own posts.

Cool! It would be good if there were a way to reveal the author without upvoting. Maybe in doing so, the arrows would hide?

You can't exactly sort "in place" in functional languages like F#/Haskell... at least trivially.

You do load in jquery, why not replace that script URL with your bookmarklet script? Script tags aren't subject to cross-domain policies, so you shouldn't have trouble there. Plus, if they were, you would have seen issues alread.

I tend to err towards 256. My rationale is this: what percent of the DB will the extra 156 characters take? If I have 1K or less users, an extra 150KB of storage is negligible. If I have 1M users, 150MB is also silly.

Just to be a devil's advocate, void main(void) can be correct when programming microcontrollers & other embedded applications. With GCC, you can even set `void main(void) __attribute__((noreturn));` . (For the lack of a better source,

"...with 12 million of those being paid downloads on iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches." That's quite a big chunk of change right there from iOS. It's just nice to see mobile advertising on Android be successful.
