Thanks. I guess it's similar to the whole P != NP issue.

Has anyone heard if they managed to observe the effect of gravity on the particles? The Nature article was vague... I remember hearing that this was one of the reasons why they needed to trap antimatter for observable lengths of time. To my

Both signify that the project was done quickly & may have bugs. Also, they aren't necessarily attempting to turn the project into a business, or even make money off the project. It's a warning. They aren't looking for startup advice, th

I had the same experience (Droid 2), except it crashed before I could even accept the Root Permissions dialog, so I doubt I suffered any major damage. (The default permissions are more innocuous)

Using http://www.alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator.php : On my computer (netbook running Chrome in Ubuntu), bitp.it clocks at 2.2khash/sec. Using this, I'll give 2000hash/sec/user as a conservative estimate. If you had 1M daily visits, ave

You might be able to do it with Java, but honestly that's even worse. The hard part is that it is a security issue to record video from a webcam from a webpage. Flash lets you get around this.

When I started, I was thinking about using JS both "for the lulz" and because I'm comfortable enough with it that it wouldn't be a hindrance, like LOLCODE or Befunge. I went with python instead because I assumed I'd need to squeeze as much

Thanks for providing that. The biggest question I had was "Why?" Even still, I don't completely understand his point (is he being rational?). Hasn't mtgox been invaluable in giving value to Bitcoins? Without it, it'd be harder to liquidate

When we did a stock market game in high school, we weren't allowed to use penny stocks. I was so excited to find stocks that were doubling or tripling daily, only to realize how worthless it'd be in real life. If anyone out there is a trade

With bike locks, you're not looking for tensile strength, you need to resist shearing & shock loads. Carbon fiber, for example, may be considered to be almost as strong as steel, but it breaks pretty easily when subjected to shear and s

You can debate the validity of Crockford's claims all you want, but I think you're missing the point. This exercise just shows how silly benchmarking is, especially when all the contenders are "sufficiently good."

To help improve the quality of comments, what if the OP's vote was weighted more than everyone else's? Their upvotes could be worth 3-5 instead of just 1 point. An OP is motivated to keep their comment thread awesome: having better comments

I tried unity in 10.10 and found it to be cumbersome. I was shocked when they announced they were moving to it for 11.04. But, it looks like it's undergone a few improvements. (Strangely, I know,) I trust the people working on Ubuntu to mak

Knuth has a large range of problems in his text. He scales them all by difficulty on a log scale from 0 to 50. Things rated 00-05 might be a basic facts or arithmetic (What is 6! ?). A set of problems in the 20s would be a good chunk of wor

I'd have to disagree too. I just applied this year, and was incredibly pleased to get accepted. (woo!) The thing is, my grades weren't stellar . Don't get me wrong, they were great, and I was ~15th in my class-- but people had better. Si

github_update.php wouldn't be linked to by any of your pages, so it shouldn't show up in the google index. You could also force it to accept some password as a GET parameter for a wee bit more security. I agree though, this is still a reall

I set up a jsperf to do some benchmarking: http://jsperf.com/noisy If you can help out by running the tests, it'll be great to compare browsers. This isn't exactly the perfect tool for the job, but it's close enough.

I've also spent some time on http://hacker.org Rather than focus on a specific "answer," you instead write algorithms to solve various flash games based on NP-complete/hard problems. Its interesting since there's always ways to improve.
