Well, I'll counter your anecdotal Chinese mothers with mine. I didn't get to do sleepovers, ever, and my parents drove over to pick me up from school if they thought I was spending too much time on extracurriculars and not working on math h

We will probably never be able to get rid of traffic completely, but we could greatly increase the capacity of a road. If every car was driven by a robot, then the distance between cars could be much smaller than it is right now.

Sure, set/costume design is different from directing, but they fall under the same umbrella of having an interest in making movies. James Cameron is not a polymath for the same reason someone who gets a Nobel in physics and chemistry is not

I don't think the article would consider any of the people you listed polymaths. One of the article's criterion for being a polymath is that you have interests in diverse fields. A musician who can play several different instruments isn't s

My parents gave me a head start in math. I spent hours solving problems instead of socializing or playing outside. I deeply resent them for it. I hope you don't push your son too hard.

Do you think all the people working your cash registers or mopping your floors can seriously be passionate about their work? How about driving cabs, or being a receptionist, or working at a call center? These are universally shitty jobs but

100 years is very recent in human history. And enjoying your work seems to be a very Western idea. My Chinese immigrant father is resigned to finding his career as an electrical engineer boring and meaningless, for example.

I'd like to add that it's also never too late to start taking better care of yourself and reaping the benefits thereof. I know a man who decided to become a vegetarian and start riding his bike more frequently at the age of 40. He's 80 now,

No, I think my point was misunderstood about the "families" of the languages. I know English, so picking up French is easier--they have cognates, and considerable overlap in the set of sounds, and they share a lot of grammatical similarity.
