It's not like that. It's just a store where if you get lucky, you get it for a dollar, but it could take months to get lucky. A dollar store is not a gamble, other than gambling the item you bought is worth slightly more than in another s

1 part genius, 1 part insanity? As for the parent post, people will get sick of it after spending $12,000 to win an iMac - weeks after signing up. If the house is so greedy to take 12,000, they can't expect this to happen forever. Casinos p

There used to be a 'Page Info' option on Netscape Communicator which basically told you the timestamp of the HTML/image file. That's not in Mozilla or any other browser I've used (Firefox, Opera, Chrome). I have to load up Communicator when

I had an email saying a Zynga user with my email address had withdrawn money from a Mastercard (which wasn't mine - nor do I own a Mastercard). Emailed Zynga to tell them about this odd semi-fraudulent activity, and they couldn't give a tos

Nope! I know Andrew though. Overall, I hardly got any public credit from Ted for my work, but never mind, that's not why I did it, and he has to prioritize who to credit when everyone chips in a little.

I worked with Ted for a few years on and off on Zigzag. He's hard to work with, but the rewards (like free dinners in restaurants, free candy, priceless signed copies of all his books, and high table dinners at Oxford), make up for the 'dif

Skeptical, I tried 'Crumar Bit 1' and it found the manual for my synth. I already have it stored locally, but this is very impressive and will come in useful for future synths/devices.

Very impressive! I once had the ability to find infinite lives, and other cheats, in Commodore 64 games using just the Action Replay cartridge's machine code monitor. I'm not as hot at it as I used to be, though. One important function is t

I think some people see the Nobel as "Awards for great things", but really it hasn't caught up with the times. Politics is also involved. So it's "Awards for whoever they THINK has done great things" - also bound by categories which don't e

Some time ago, someone posted to HN a service that could basically find images based on an input image. It worked very well, so it could be that.

I think it's better to take into account a book's longevity. If it is a classic in print 50 years and sells steadily, it could outsell a book in the NYT bestseller list, which might only sell that big for a year or even less.

I was rambling on about this in 2001. You use Gnutella to search the 'transient web', which is just a bunch of home webservers serving up people's pages. Gnutella would link them all together and perform searches, as it does for MP3s now. N

My general impression is that Microsoft don't want to make a PC app store, because they'd rather let a 1000 flowers bloom and for the software developers to market them freely. Also known as 'commoditised' shareware where different apps com
