I don't know about you, but my iPhone 4 was feeling pretty sluggish doing normal everyday stuff in iOS by the time I upgraded to the 5. That said, I have used a friend's 4s and it was also quite a bit more fluid than the 4. Between that and

Well, that was disappointing. Spent about 20 minutes trying to get in on this, only to find out it is sold out when the site finally loads. If they want developers to give Windows 8 a spin, they'll need to put in a little more effort to mak

I totally understand the feeling. I'm currently in a low pay full time coding job without benefits. I'm in no financial situation to consider quitting (I wouldn't last a month). Only doing what I do at work advances my skillset little, so I

In OSX, instead of setting caps lock to "no action", I set it to be another control key. I have never been able to hit the pathetic little excuse for a control key on Mac keyboards without also tapping fn or option.

My grandma used to work as a TSA screener in Southern California, both before 9/11 (when they were ran by a private organization IIRC) and after. She would regularly have to go take classes because she would miss the dummy guns and grenades

Part of it is personal value. I spent years learning Japanese and frequently felt that, while there were many resources for learning kanji, there were few routes that one could take to mastery that were not mostly self-guided and didn't tak

I would build a comprehensive framework for teaching Hanzi/Kanji to non-native learners of languages that use Chinese characters. Anecdotally, I've seen what I assume is a disproportionate amount of passionate learners of languages that use

I requested one in September and got the invite in early December so I'm not sure if there is any real rhyme or reason to how the invites roll out. You might check your spam folder as well; mine had somehow ended up there.

To all those pointing to cast iron, have you tried using carbon steel pans? I hear that they have many of the same properties as cast iron pans (they're seasoned the same way) but weigh less and heat up/down more quickly. I have been thinki

Agree wholeheartedly on the Victorinox Fibrox not holding their edge, though I don't have any experience with their chef's knives, just the santoku.

Anecdotally, I went from working a part-time job making 11/hour a year ago to working full-time as a (very) junior Rails developer for double my old pay after a friend encouraged me to make the transition. I did have a lot of general comput

While most of this can be forgiven thanks to Simple being a newcomer to banking, having all that extra information sent along (ssn, dob, etc.) just seems like a horrible oversight. As a recent Simple convert, I sincerely hope they listen to

What I really miss from Japan are the toilets with a sink on top of the water container on the back (something like this: http://f00.inventorspot.com/images/profile-toilet.jpg ). You flush the toilet and the water refilling the container c

Kind of fits with what he says in the article: "For me, Bootstrap is very fun, not serious – nearly every line is a joke. It’s trying to provoke you. Taking shortcuts. Demanding that you reread it. Reread it again. It’s very pop. Very optim

This is great. I'm still fairly new to programming and all my experience until now has been confined to dynamically-typed, interpreted languages (other than a little dabbling into C for learning's sake), so I'm really appreciative of any ef

I've heard murmurs of a RailsGirls workshop here in Austin and I know a few of my female friends were very interested in attending when I talked to them about it. I think it's great to try to get more women involved in the industry, and whi

I agree entirely. I started programming with ruby and rails about a year and a half ago and have made a habit of going to meetups and conferences in the area. I have seen nothing that wasn't intended to be constructive and helpful and I wou

I heard a speaker at a conference say that Sass covered a lot more of the weird CSS edge-cases than LESS, can anyone comment on the validity of that? I've used Sass in Rails but I wouldn't be opposed to checking out LESS if there was a comp

I'm not sure there are 100,000 family-owned businesses where the owner has 75 years+ experience, spends 15+ hours a day at work and takes their job so seriously. I've worked in kitchens that were highly-rated in their own cities, but they n
