Second this. I lived in frisco for a year and while it's never as bad as they make it sound, it was pretty bad looking back. There were shootings at the intersection our office was located at. Car breakins were not a big deal and just accep

My hunch is that even if all banks magically cut off spammers in a hypothetical scenerio, the spam industry will figure out a way to collect payments, even if it means collecting cash. Of course this may reduce their margins. But there is o

Reminds me of all the times when I share an idea to hear the other guy say "wow, great idea!" to which I go "wait, really? how do you know!?". I've replaced the binary means of judging my ideas with one that allows for more shades of gray.

While the naive me wants to act shocked, the other part of me gets the feeling this is business as usual and mostly just a big deal because it leaked out. I wouldn't be surprised if Google had its own anti-FB plants doing their thing. May b

I wish Google bought Skype just so I could find and search archives of my conversations in my gmail. It is incredibly hard to believe how skype survives without online chat log archiving. I find it almost essential for business-related work

people rarely engaged with it IMO user engagement is one of twitter's biggest issues. As it stands right now, twitter is a great tool for journalist research and other niche research. That's been true for a few years now. The problem is t

I was telling my brother earlier today how I have a nagging feeling twitter will end up as the myspace of short-message sharing. From the outside, it seems like a confused org with too many changes at the top much too often. Add to that the

Really if you can write code that works, I'm not sure why you are having issues finding work. I can understand if you can't find enough to fill up your 40 hour week at the beginning but you should not have so much difficulty finding contrac

Lack of sleep can put me in a state where I care less about my ego and thus doing certain things I may typically hesitate to do. Extreme anger also has a similar effect on me. I've heard being drunk being described in a similar fashion but

Yours/google's definition of scale is very narrow, which was my point. Google only looks at scale from a software point of view. While that may work with search, there are many industries where you must scale with humans, such as door to do

I don't think it's so much about trust as alternatives and best practices. Ideally you should not trust any system when running mission critical apps and always have multiple levels of backups and monitoring including humans on call.

Agree. I'd avoid cloud for half as critical apps where I cannot CLEARLY picture where my servers are in a physical sense and how I can physically get a hold of them if shit hits the fan.

This is where you wish you had a data center address and a cabinet number where you could pop in, grab your servers and move the heck out to another DC. I wonder if this will get more companies to maintain a non-cloud, vanilla setup on some

I really dislike driveby statements like "the cloud saves money". From my use case when I ran a high traffic site, it was several times more expensive than normal dedicated servers.

why not stick with what you excel at? Because most companies don't believe that trying to expand into another area will significantly hurt them in areas they already excel at.

There is a general tip about not friending your Mom. While I appreciate that, in my case I mostly use facebook for keeping in touch with close and extended family spread across the world. So in my case, it's the friend that gets the ditch.

I'd think the law limits their leverage, too. I don't think twitter can threaten, directly or indirectly, to cripple tweetdeck in any way if the sale doesn't go through or if they sell to another party.
