But was this because it's .online? I got one and it was fine. The only issue was the usual trap with all Namecheap domains: They tell you it's all set, and it works, until they randomly email you a week later asking for email veri

Spanner has similar limitations on xact size, maybe for this reason?

Phone to PC VNC is my only way to start/stop a YouTube live stream remotely. I don't mean using the phone's webcam, rather there's a camera always sitting elsewhere. YouTube's app and mobile site are both missing th

I emailed him in 7th grade asking if Pages could automate bibliographies. In hindsight, EasyBib was good enough.

I honestly didn't know English had so many non-Latin characters in those centuries. Like a modern English reader can more easily read (but not understand) a Roman inscription than some of these examples.

Interesting. How is that faster than just having the code running on the same machine as the DB? Guess it could be smarter about conflicts than random backoff.

PiHole should err on the side of false negatives, uBO on false positives. Difference being uBO only takes a click to disarm for a site. Personally I don't want to introduce any chance of my DNS being a problem.

I get this. uBO on Firefox has "just worked" for me for a long time with 0 configuration (I don't mess with the blacklists), but on phones it's a different game, and on Chrome, and before uBO there was other drama.

Yeah, the only examples I know of it being default are Spanner and Cockroach, which are for a different use case.

Yep, there have been times I get through a whole project without any explicit transactions. In fact it can be a sign of not fully normalized schema design if you rely on those a lot (which can ofc be fine if you deliberately wanted that).

Right. So my code had a helper to run some inner func in a serializable xact, in rw or ro mode, which would retry with backoff. Like the TransactionRunner in Spanner. But even with no retries occurring, it was very slow.

Seems like a frequent surprise is that Postgres and MySQL don't default to serializable (so not fully I in ACID). They do read-committed. I didn't see this article mention that, but maybe I missed it. The article says read-committ

How long ago was that if you don't mind me asking? I was in college 2014-2016, and GroupMe existed but was on its way out. I asked our college interns around 2022 what people use for class groups, and I think they weren't sure wha

Not sure what "autopilot" means in a car. Is the self-parking feature called "landing gear"?

I can see where they're coming from with the video-only concept, but even they admit it's not self-driving yet, so just don't call it self-driving (or "FSD**" or "autopilot") until it is.

Possibly, but this wasn't a self-driving car. The ruling gave Tesla some blame for falsely marketing it as one.

Was curious what my abandoned FB shows if I log in now. Mostly posts from groups I joined ages ago that are surprisingly still active, some random local news articles, and ads for restaurants.

Plenty of supply-driven inflated prices did go back down after covid, or after the post-covid inflation shock. Gasoline is one example. At the same time, USD M2 supply increased an unusual 40% from Jan 2020 to Jan 2022. It only fell a littl

I know the Rust trait system has an answer to every OO concept. Another is that data field inheritance is replaced by composition. But these are more workarounds for the rarer cases you want to do OO in Rust, not the intended usual path, an

You can do OO this way if you really want in Rust, kinda like how you can do it in C, but it gets cumbersome. Especially because there's no GC.

It doesn't seem uncommon for someone to generally like Rust but still want to use something OO for UI. I'm in that boat. Never liked OOP much, but it makes sense sometimes.

I did this a long time ago as Swift calling Objective-C++ which can call C++ libs, in that case OpenCV. So it wasn't awful but did require making an ObjC++ wrapper, unless I did something wrong which is also possible.

Signal focuses on security and privacy above all else, which they don't think a federated model can do well. Case in point, XMPP in practice is less secure than Signal but has the advantages you mentioned. The other common anti-federat
