I was kinda hoping someone in this thread would post their server they made using this tutorial.

Seems like the smartphone revolution was the hardest thing for XMPP. Push notifications and voice chat were both "batteries not included."

Did the "forum channels" feature not help handle the huge server usecase? I've only barely been in one.

Yeah and even some of us IT people weren't enough into video games to care about hosting voice chat. Like I ran the middle school Minecraft server but not a Teamspeak for it.

Isn't this usually cause the admin went overboard? Like a server of 10 people has 30 channels, one of which is a lobby you have to clear first, and 10 bots telling you that you leveled up or whatever.

Because a Discord server is very easy and free to set up, and has nice features like screensharing that weren't commonly handled well at the time. Before that, we used Skype or AIM or iChat if we even wanted audio at all; Teamspeak was

Forgot to mention the original WhatsApp was ejabberd under the hood but ofc was heavily modified and didn't work with regular XMPP clients

Sometimes I wonder if the endgame is each person having their own XMPP server for their set of devices. S2S is your E2EE then. Your chain of trust is your existing CA, unlike Matrix which starts from scratch. Cause XMPP wasn't designed

Oh, I mean Facebook Chat not Facebook Messenger. Supposedly that was ejabberd.

Don't know if it's still this way, but I had the exact same experience with the XEPs a decade ago. Even message history is an extension, but at least it has broad support. File transfer was much harder to get right. The servers (e

Opposite end in terms of security. Telegram group chats have no E2EE, private messages aren't E2EE by default (you have to initiate it as a "secret" chat), and the encryption itself is home rolled.

Ok so it's not just me. I never had predictive text enabled but stopped being able to type easily when I switched from iPhone 5 to 12 mini. Thought I needed to get used to the new phone, but it's been years.

Yeah, I use a separate unmodified browser for anything important, which are usually the same sites you don't need content blocking on anyway.

I'm fine with the design, just want my phone to stop freezing up and glitching out.
