Good point. This is exactly what JavaScript does with NaN and the set of numbers, and errors are harder to track down because of it. Computer numbers in general have all sorts of issues like this where clean mathematical theory is broken. N

Yeah in general it’s good to avoid sometimes returning a value and sometimes undefined. There’s an equivalence you can make between a type and a mathematical set, where you say that the type is the set of all possible values for that type.

I’ll go the other direction. Public libraries have large and networked collections, physical and digital, that they let you borrow for free. Why do we need to buy from Amazon and subscribe to Netflix when in theory the libraries could provi

Forgive me for not having more details on hand right now. So far in my reading of her book, Alexander’s thesis has three main prongs of support. The first is historical. When we look back at Jim Crow, do we say that grandfather clauses and

There are some weird corners of JavaScript that I went years without knowing. Did you know object literals support getter and setter methods[1]? As other commenters will point out, such quirks are as easy to look up as they are irrelevant t

Devising a new, more familiar name for something like hashing is a good idea here because it communicates that “this is a complex thing handled by specialists, but it’s implications are important to us.”

Can you explain that a bit more? What if candidate A was sourced internally, had a slight edge over B, and wanted 20-33% more in pay?

Let’s see, $10 is enough to pick from a few dresses at Walmart[1]. A haute couture gown might cost $100k[2]. It’s not apples to apples but that’s still a difference of 10,000X. [1] https://www.walmart.com/browse/clothin

Could you unpack this a bit for the relative layperson? I once heard a guy at a Haskell meetup say that “codata is the categorical dual of data” but I didn’t know what that means then and I still don’t know.

And even on a bicycle or motorcycle it's not that simple. At low speeds you can turn right to go right, but any faster and it's you do the opposite to initiate a lean and the lean does the turning. This goes unnoticed on bicycles,

Yes, but using Elm has convinced me of the significant difference between runtime checks and compile time checks. In a large enough codebase, reaching every code path is non-trivial. It’s very easy to write code that only runs when it gets

In my experience there’s a difference between being production ready and claiming to be production ready. Quite a few projects (Node.js and Backbone) achieved wide adoption before 1.0.0. For the record I’m not sure the Elm project has any c

It’s as much about what Elm _doesn’t_ have. The biggest thing here is that Elm does not allow mutation. This turns out to be great because it eliminates little pockets of state that make your app’s behavior hard to predict and that eventual

It’s a bit unfortunate that Elm will always be left out of lists like this. Yes it’s a different language that compiles to JavaScript, but unlike other languages that do this, Elm exists solely to excel at front-end web development. Ironica

Interesting, how explicit is explicit? So much of literature is implied references. Assuming that later works are always “linking to” earlier works, could you not use page rank for, say, rap lyrics?
