A one-child policy is ethically achievable by making the parents rich or otherwise making retirement care a non-concern. If you look at studies, rich people or people who have retirement taken care of are more likely to produce less childre

It's a policy how wikimedia acts when clients lack a user agent header, it's therefore effectively a rule for clients as without a proper UA header, they may be blocked indefinitely.

It's not as bad if you're willing to wait a bit. Token transfers are like 10$ if you set the gas price to around 120 Gwei, should validate within an hour or two. The tricky bit is the exchanges, though in my experience, the worst

I love some of these, using them to swap USDC/ETH when I need some more stable tokens. However, the downside at the moment is a high price for transactions on Ethereum, I hope this will get better this year, heard there is some upcomin

Wikimedia has a User-Agent policy which is being violated here. Hence this is the property owner putting up a sign that says "risk of injury", so if you walk in and injure yourself, you only have to blame yourself for being neglig

The fix is to use alternative consensus mechanisms like PoS. It's not "killing combustion engines is an easy fix: Just don't drive" it's "killing combustion engines is an easy fix: Use more efficient types of e

It's 0.05% of energy that could be used elsewhere to reduce emissions (since a lot of miners sit on renewable energy). It's a worthwhile target because it#s easy to fix: don't waste energy like that. edit: additionally a lot

Considering you're talking worldwide energy consumption, 0.05% is a lot of energy. Just because the number is small doesn't mean it's not large by comparison.

KeepassXC has availability of Argon2id and Argon2. It's very decent software IMO that improves over standard Keepass.

Phone lines are their own power grid. It can have outages too, but since they don't share infrastructure too much with HV lines, it's less likely both fail at the same time.

Pure oxygen won't burn anyways. What would it oxidize? If you had frozen a mix of oxygen and hydrogen (without the two separating) it would be possible to ignite and burn it.

sudo can be restricted to specific commands, so you can restrict non-root users to do VERY specific actions (ie, the webdev can reload apache2 but not restart or stop it or take any other action). This means the webdev has the least amoun

Twitter uses Snowflakes, simialr to FB and other services. They scale better than manual ID range allocation and don't entirely behave like auto-increment. The big part is that it can contain gaps. So there is no way to tell if an ID d

I don't see the point there. Lucene is a library, you can hardly offer it as SaaS. It's gluework. On the other hand, Elastic is much more enduser software, which is much more routinely abused for SaaS hosting by larger corporation

The court still needs good proof that you intended to receive the package. If they don't have proof, there isn't much for a conviction to stand on and the next instance should slap it back hard.

If you use the KDE Discover, it's pretty smooth as well. Searched for "Signal", found the app, clicked on install, waited, then clicked on open. Signal App opened. Uses Flatpak in the Background and handles updates too.
