Elite was released in 1984 and did not have realistic movement (Oolite, an open source game in the same vein is well worth checking out ). I think you are talking about Frontier: Elite II and Frontier: First Encounters

My experience at work but not at Google, has been your standard sexism really accounts for most of discrimination, which I've put down to being seem as not a man. Yes you get get some extra problems being trans but way less than I expected
