   There's quite a bit of C / C++ in the curriculum at Waterloo, although many of the courses that accept assignments in C++ also accept Java submissions so I don't know the actual breakdown of what students choose to submit most of their code

   The arguments are all very good, but I think I prefer Scheme as a first programming language just because the syntax is easy to teach and you can get to the good stuff much more quickly. Doesn't meet your 'real world' requirement though - a

    Abolish the penny, use a uniform rounding rule to make the nickel the smallest denomination. I hate pennies.

    I've hit 3 dan before, but right now I'm probably a weak 2 dan. Life & Death is the key, so hopefully running through a thousand fresh problems will do the trick! If you do the same, you can do a lot better than 5k :)

    The math involved for basic 3d is overrated. Just sit down and copy code at first, and write reams of stuff that works. It should be no problem to magpie enough code to get a simple engine together.
