Roughly half the article could have been done without leaving python though. I don't know if python has a good bitset implementation, but at the very least everything before that could have been done in python. So it is more "comp

The most obvious way it is wrong is that it is archaic. There is simply no reason to ever pass return values in hidden state. Just use return values damnit.

Don't upgrade your architecture all at once. First bump yourself to rails 7 (including any other gems you can upgrade), then do any other changes you want.

> despite amazon throwing engineers at it Yeah, that is one way of phrasing it. Another way to phrase it is that Amazon took it over, turned it into an ingestion funnel to their book store, and has done as little as possible after that.

100% this. Developer experience in a language is a so much bigger question than if it has static types or not.

Yeah, it is essentially the same idea as the guild thing in Ruby, and Ruby is explicitly not working towards nogvl.

It may not be a step towards that. Ruby has guilds which is a very similar idea and they are explicitly not working towards removing them altogether at this point. Matz did a full keynote on the latest Euruku defending not working towards r

I threw the article on our local paleontologist in the team and he claims the food of trilobites have been know for like 20 years or so, but that the new thing here is that some team got funds to do a synchroton study, which apparently cost

You can however use bump allocation for things that are not arenas. There are some GC allocators that use the technique.

He is talking about the case when the worker itself die for some reason. It can be due to for example when the worker died due to using too much memory or if it hits a segfault or whatever.

That is true of well designed nonlinear code as well. The code needs to tell a story or it will be a mess.

The guy was still blogging about rails last year, so it seems the time with rails wasn't really ended after all. It would be nice with a follow-up post.

This question as stated make very little sense as futexes are mostly used to implement lock functionality. As such, they typically have overhead but provide correctness in a multi-threaded environment.

So focus the book on something other than pure fighting! Fantasy is so much more than campaign stories. There happened so much in the early industrialist era, supremacy of gunpowder is one part of that but there is so much more in how socie

They won't outperform b-trees in memory either. Cache lanes and cache hierarchies of modern computers (as in built after the 90s) mean that neither AVL trees or red-black trees have any place anymore.

It would be nice if llvm provided some sort of IR linter that looks for common issues and list the biggest offenders in a set of IR.

But eh, that is not the case in crystal. You are not on your own - the language knows what a variable is during runtime and you have plenty of ways to dispatch between the types.

Crystal union types are tagged as the actual type a variable contains is tracked. I honestly have no idea how anything could work if they were not tagged. Like how on earth would you know what method to invoke?

In the case of rails, using multiple threads will checkout extra database connections. Database connections are often a limited resource though, so it is not without peril.

They fulfill different functions. Low trading delays make certain the difference between buying and selling price is low, and reduces differences in price between marketplaces. Both very good for people doing long term investments.
