In Sweden? Oh yes.

What? No, that is laughable. What would be career ending would be the massive reduction of income within Apple. That would end careers, and quickly change enough minds that they would change policies.

Same is true here in Sweden, we just have deep enough reservoirs. We also have nuclear, but hydro is also a really big part and as Canada has even lower population density than we do it shouldn't be unreasonable. But perhaps terrain in

Are there no rains in western Canada? Why is hydro not an alternative?

But libc is more than a set of global functions - it has a bunch of global state associated with them as well. And manipulation of that is what I consider a runtime.

Yes, it is a runtime provided by libc, but how on earth is it not a runtime?

Some other languages also perform this optimization, for example Ruby and Crystal.

Yes it typically does have a runtime. For example, it has persistent structures in memory related to malloc/free, and the manipulation of those most definitely show up when you profile.

Yes. For example EU have eliminated excessive roaming charges between telephone operators in the EU. That brought down costs for consumers by multiple orders of magnitude. In practice, price controls can work well when there is no efficient

Indeed. For example, they could learn that Copilot is a winning name so lets go with that.

Very, very impressive. It will be very interesting to see how much of crystal is supported, of IO and fibers and gc etc.

Ruby does not use reference counting. It has a mark and sweep generational gc that is incremental and use compaction. I doubt it would be state of the art, but it is not too bad nowadays.

If anything, the drift is towards GC being only tracing as it is so dominant in the languages that are normally considered having GC. But before C++ (via boost) introduced shared pointers, and Swift ARC, I'd expect the separation to ba

If we are talking long running multithreaded processes, then libc malloc have issues that isn't even fragmentation. There are many workloads when it seems to forget to return whole empty pages and just accumulate allocated areas despit

Glibc allocator is also notoriously prone to not giving back memory that could be given back to the OS when running several threads over a long time period. Reducing pool size helps a bit, but not sufficiently to make memory stable.

How is it awful on the Ruby side? In my experience it is a solved problem since bundler was invented 15 years ago. It's been very free from pain during the last 10 years or so.

Or that sort order is locale independent. Swedish is a good example here as åäö are sorted at the end, and where until 2006 w was sorted as v. And then it changed and w is now considered a letter of its own.
