Use nvi instead of vim for precisely this reason - Customization is for emacs.. which I also use when I want to customize things.

I personally don't think this is so much a result of Assange having a bias as it is a result of him being in a compromised position since being imprisoned in the Equadorian embassy.. One the one hand, he has the US wanting to prosecute
