Regular computers have less handrails and you can hose yourself. Back in the day even a 12 year old needed to at least sometimes poke around autoexec.bat so some understanding as to why things are happening was necessary.

I would be willing to bet that vast majority of “subscribed” newsletters are spam. I always receive a ton of newsletters. Never once have I signed up, I always uncheck all sign up prompts and always immediately unsubscribe if I receive one.

The discoverability sucked because Apple never rolled this out to all of the devices, themselves grossly under utilized the feature and eventually ghosted it. It was by far the best cursor control paradigm on iOS. Now everything is long pre

If we somehow manage to solve the two main spreadsheet downsides (imo): testing and change/version control, then spreadsheets would be a terrific programming paradigm. As it is now I find it very powerful and empowering, but also scary

There were shorter queues for a while. Now they aren’t. When they started most shops (I live in France) had both standard and automatic checkout. And about three people to deal with stuck machines (mostly scale issues, anti theft tag remova

As a programmer I found that all no-or-less-code approaches break up sooner than one would expect. Eventually I chosen to always use the programming language itself for data fetching, looping and leave the templating (lit html in my case) t

There are many other problems. A subway or city train stops every few minutes. This means that if somebody gets hurt, has a stroke, assaults somebody, starts shooting up… there is almost immediately a way to board more staff and handle the

I’d much rather see these people being employed at the service level. For example when automatic checkout machines came I thought “great, more people in the aisles that I can ask stuff”. Of course that never happened so now the reality is a

In my experience it’s a huge “it depends on the person”. Younger self taught engineers with a huge ego can be a real PITA. Some have tendency to question everything that has already been written, wasting time.

As for the tinkering advice in TFA: While I wholeheartedly agree, as I grow older I find it progressively harder to force myself to start a new (and novel) project just because. I still have personal projects, but they are very purpose driv

Even after writing tons of python the whitespace is still the reason why I never reach for it by default. Today the IDEs got much better, but I still can’t see the significant whitespace as anything than downside. With brackets I can indent

This. Side by side windows and horizontal splits make it so vertical tabs are not that useful. TBH in general I find tabs less useful as they multiply. Most of the time I just Cmd+A in chrome to search for the tab I need.

At work we’re encouraged to use AI, so I do. For me the one thing that works well is using it to write one off scripts that do stuff and would be a chore to write. Usually in 2-3 prompts I can get a python or shell script that reads some fi

Might be a whoosh, but really don’t understand the idea of seeing the interviewer as an adversary. Stress in interviews comes from many places but honestly one of the roles of the interviewer is to bring it down.

Random people have no business of knowing what a “PWA” is. So of course they don’t ask specifically for that. People asking for “I just want to have fully featured apps coming from wherever” are aplenty. Apple has pushed app snippets and in

I think there is a difference between “hidden” (like the notification and control centers on an iPhone) and “out of the way less visible but still there”, like a car seat adjustment lever on the side of the seat.

Is anything preventing JS from compiling the proper stepwise dom access if the querySelector parameter is a literal? That would basically push the interpolation into the parsing step.

It’s similar enough to html that anybody familiar with html and JS can pick it up. Quirks it has, but I like that using it mostly just feels like building a huge html string.

The problem is not backward compatibility but labeling. A USB-C cable looks universal but isn’t. Some of them just charge, some do data, some do PD, some give you access to high speed. But there is no way to know. I believe the problem here
