Allowing websites to get a somewhat accurate count of visitors plus bounce rate helps them to tell how they’re doing. Hopefully, they use that to guide developing a better product/service. If you can allow them to do that without getti

Taste is almost definitionally subjective and culturally mediated. There are trends in flavors, and the ability of a vintner to match those trends is indistinguishable from producing “better” wine. If you take the drink outside of its refer

For people not reading the whole thing (reasonable, it is long): the author comes to the conclusion that it was not so “genius” after all, given the prior art, and that he read it in a computer graphics book. He still gives Carmack props fo

Fruit at the discount grocery store is usually old/nearing end of life. Citrus, and limes in particular, get noticeably more bitter as they age and oxidize. This actually leads to a schism in European/American bartending. Europe j

I assume you’re joking, but in case you’re not - the plan would put the capital city (Prague/Praha) under 200m of water.

Even in the realm of "real" reviews, there's a filtering problem. As others have mentioned in this thread, many services will just not post a poor review. They have an incentive to make a sale, and a low star rating is going

Fair point, it’s all hard. I intended to call out romance as a (long shot) potential source of overnight success. Reading the various self-publishing forums, any post that starts with “I earned six figures on my first book” ends with “and i

I ran a novel on Royal Road as a serial. Definitely a hard market to get traction in if you’re not doing litrpg or xanxia. I published a techno thriller at 2+ chapters a week for six months and ended up with ~20 readers for the conclusion.

If you want to become a writer, you should definitely have a financial cushion. Replicating Stross’s success will almost certainly take years of minimally paid hard work, plus a fair bit of luck. Writing is a hard, hard business. Unless you

My 1 bedroom in Cole Valley was $3,500 when I left it in 2019. It was big (800sq ft) and had parking, but should give you a comp point.

Fair point. I guess Twitch takes 50% from their streamers (and runs ads for the folks who don’t sub). YouTube takes 30%. So TikTok is at the high end, but the number is not as insane as it first appeared to me.

You’re right. I didn’t consider the AppStore. From the article, a $103 donation ended up as a balance of $33 in the TikTok account. If we assume TikTok has not negotiated a better rate (doubtful), then the math looks like: Donation: $106 Af

When you have a systemic shock with unknown impact, rational can still be ultimately wrong. If there’s a 50% chance of total economic meltdown, and you can avert it with a few years of high inflation, that might still be the correct decisio

This is correct in hindsight. At the time, a lot of smart people were forecasting economic armageddon. Businesses screwed up too; big, well financed companies like Airbnb did massive layoffs. My superhost acquaintance went on to have her be

I’ve shopped at a couple worker owned co-ops. None of them grow their own food, though some do value-add preparation (e.g. prepared salads). I think there are farming co-ops, but that does not seem to be what the article is about.
