I don't think you've mischaracterized me, but you've given undue attention to statements that I consider tangental and would be okay with discarding. Let me restate my position, which I think I can do more clearly now: 1. The

I really don't think my opinion is so complicated. Your reaction should depend a great deal on whether they were being straightforward (doubtful in your case) or malicious. In neither case will you get very far by trying to control the

Transgender or not, the pertinent issue is not whether people have a right to choose their pronouns (they don't), but what gender the speaker believes the referent to be. If you're using third person pronouns, you're generall

I was just spitballing, I'm not committing to any hard and fast rule here. Someone referred to you with the wrong gender because they mistook you for a girl, and probably appreciated the correction. This is way different than the trans

I didn't choose my own name or nickname either, but I take your point that some people do. I guess I would say that pronouns are primarily syntactic constructs while proper nouns are not.

It's special treatment rather than common courtesy. I don't get to choose the pronouns that other people refer to me by, and neither does anyone else I know. I would only be offended by someone misgendering me if it were clearly m

Speaking of parity, while the Guix project may have some catching up to do in general, I think their documentation has been superior to Nix for a while.

Searching Google is the real dark art these days, especially if you don't use personalized results. I am constantly frustrated by Google straight up ignoring my most important search terms. At least with DuckDuckGo I know that it'

I've always thought someone should use guile to add support for elisp plugins to vim & neovim using their rpc interfaces. Then maybe if something like that existed the org-mode authors could be convinced to cleanly separate out the

Well my only examples were networking-related, but something like D-Bus could easily have a filesystem-based API instead. I'm willing to accept that files are a bad abstraction for graphics. I don't really know anything about that

I can't really disagree with most of your post. The reason Plan 9 or its ideas can't be resurrected very easily now is because every machine on the internet has to pretend to be UNIX and speak a thousand ad-hoc protocols. UNIX&#

I understand why it didn't take off, but I don't think it's true that Plan 9 was just a tiny incremental improvement over UNIX's architecture. Modern networking and distributed systems would be a LOT nicer today if Plan

I don't know if it's been fixed, but I recommend pointing mutt at an offline copy of your mail instead of directly at an IMAP server. Use isync or another program to sync your mail.

You can actually. If you use mandoc instead of mandb, it automatically generates and passes tag files to less. Then you can just type ":t e" to jump to the docs for the -e option, for example.

We don't need to decide to apply this rule sometimes but other times that rule. When we come to an ambiguous string, we apply both rules nondeterministically. Here's a pseudo-grammar that I think describes both possibilities.

Your post doesn't really agree with what I was taught. > the ambiguity rests in not knowing what is the lexical category of foo in "foo * bar". Right, so there are 2 possible parse trees. Being able to disambiguate them wi

As far as I know C is context-free. If C's grammar is ambiguous, that just makes it an ambiguous context-free grammar [1]. [1]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambiguous_grammar

Of course, but price doesn't just mean money. I think I read somewhere that AMD was willing to grant Microsoft & Sony more rights over the chips than their competitors. I don't know how much that was a factor though.
